GRADE 4
The force of a magnet is called
magnetism. It can move materials
made of iron and steel. However,
a magnet does not exert force on
all objects. It can only exert force
onto magnetic materials.
These are rocks with a lot of iron in
them. Magnetite is an example of a rock
that is naturally magnetic. Natural
magnets can be found on Earth. Since
they are already magnetic, their
properties no longer need to be altered
for them to become magnetized.
They are called as it is because
their magnetic force is weak
and lasts only for a short time.
They are made from soft iron or
any soft metal.
They are made from hard iron, a
type of iron with some other
special materials. Their
magnetic force is strong and
lasts for a long time.
Magnets can be found
everywhere. Nearly
everything that works
around you uses a
magnetic field.
They are used in credit cards.
The black strip at the back of
an ATM card is a magnetic strip
that contains certain data or
information about the holder.
The microwave oven and
other appliances that use
motor engines use
magnets to make them
work.
Bar magnets are used in compasses
too. A compass is an object used by
travelers to determine direction.
The needle in a compass is
positioned so it can turn freely.
The area around a magnet where the
magnetic force acts is called the
magnetic field. The magnetic field cannot
be seen. It makes no noise. It has no odor
or taste. You cannot touch it. You can
only feel the effects of a magnetic field.
