Magazine Planning
Who is your target audience and why?
For my magazine, my target audience will be 16 to 24 year old, from all
races and both gender who shares an interest in all different types of music
and are social economic groups B, C1 and C2. However the magazine will
be accessible by all as long as they're interested in the content published.
What style, genre or time of music is your magazine about or is going to appeal to a
range of music tastes?
The magazine will have a very clean look to it, with minimal puffs and buzz
words as possible to give the impression that we do not 'ask' for readers.
It will not have a set genre or type of music in which the magazine will
focus, instead it'll publish what is 'hot' at the time the magazine comes out.
This will influence readers, fans of the portrayed artist and also attract
drifters, groupies and trendies.
How often will your magazine come out, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or bi-monthly?
My magazine will be published weekly in order to keep the readers
updated on the music industry and world. Also, this will allow me to
improve the magazine more frequently and in a better way, by looking at
how many people are actually buying the magazine when certain types of
information is published.
How much will your magazine cost? Consider who your target audience is and also how
often your magazine comes out. You may want to state that the first edition will be at a
discounted price to attract new audiences.
My magazine will cost £3 per edition published. Although this may be
considered high for teenagers and young people, at around the ages of 16-
24 you'd expect them to have a job or some sort of income. Also, I'm
targeting rather high classes, therefore £3 is a fair amount to be paid.
However, the first edition published will be half price in order to invite
readers to buy the magazine.
Is your magazine going to be glossy like Q Magazine or more like a newspaper like
Kerrang! explain why?
I will focus on making the magazine glossy like Q Magazine, Vogue and
others. I chose this because it will make the magazine worth the price and
give it a better quality. This may even attract people in the social economic
group A to buy the magazine as it looks more high end than others.
Who will feature on the first edition cover and why you have chosen them (this is a made up artist
or group)?
• The first edition will feature a 17 years young female artist, who fits into
the Indie Pop genre. This artist was chosen because she will be able to
better connect with the young audience that my magazine will have. Also
an interview with a young famous person would be interesting for
readers to compare their lives to it.
What sections will feature in the contents of your magazine?
I will feature sections such as:
• ‘Gigs’ which will list all the upcoming concerts in different areas of
London
• ‘Fashion’ which will talk about what is ‘hot’ at the moment amongst
celebrities as well as people in the streets.
• ‘Street insider’ which similarly to ‘gigs’, will talk about ongoing events but
include the 'behind the scenes' of these.
How will your magazine appeal to your target audience?
The magazine will appeal to the audience because:
• The content is suitable for all,
• The 'hot right now' artists that will be featured in interview and posters,
• Upcoming gigs will always be published,
• Fashion tips on what is 'in' with the artists right now and where to get
them.
Which magazine publisher have you chosen to publish your magazine and why?
I have chosen Bauer as my publisher because of how well integrated and
known the publisher is.
Also they focus mainly on 16-34 year old, which suits my magazine as my
focus audience are 16-24 year olds.
They also feature many famous artists and other music magazines which
could mean better connections for my magazine and also the possibility of
constantly having influential artists being featured.
