MAGAZINE EVALUATION QUESTION 4
DESCRIBE HOW YOU USED SECONDARY
RESEARCH TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT.
I researched to gather more knowledge about my article subjects, as there were plenty of
angles I could write from. So I had to decide what angle I was coming from and find
sources and examples to help support my articles and make them more credible.
Secondary research is much easier as its less time consuming and you can find a range of
different sources, instead of being limit to people and the knowledge you know.
I mainly looked for similar articles on the internet to find inspiration and look at the sources
they used and whether I could look in to them more further and use them for my article.
The internet for me was the best place to gather sources as I could just type in what I
wanted to find and find reliable sources and examples to back up my articles. I also
used, newspapers, TV and social media.
I mainly used qualitative research as its used to explore insight into people behaviours and
opinions. This type of research is going into people attitudes and verdict on a subject, looking
into their emotions and opinions. You can get a wider range and more detailed responses from
qualitative research. As you can ask more open questions and get the information you
specifically want to know.
Qualitative research is a method of analysing unstructured information such as, reviews,
feedback, videos, interviews, notes, open answered questions and similar materials that don’t
rely on statistics or numbers.
Whereas Quantitative research is asking people for their opinions in a structured manner so that
you can produce hard facts and statistics to guide you. To get reliable statistical results, it’s
important to survey people in fairly large numbers and to make sure they are a representative
sample of your target market.
I wanted to find out more about my audience and more in depth sources, so didn’t really use
quantitative research, as I thought it was quite limited.
Secondary research has its disadvantages as is biased which is unavoidable.
It was hard to find sources for my articles as some articles I did weren't really talked about much
such as my debate article, it was about what is deemed more important in the music industry
voice or image and It was hard to find a range of credible source that relate to it. So I had to
dig deep into other similar subjects, such as reviews on stars who can’t sing live, look at the
images of stars and how successful they are, such as Michael Jackson and I looked at Susan
Boyle audition to show how bad the industry is judging on looks. I had look further into them
and link them to make them suitable and relate to my article. It was also really hard to find
sources from a range of different medias, such as books and documentaries as I didn’t know
what to look for.
To over come these problems I also asked people for their opinions on the subject, so it showed
that my target audience was interested in my debate and that they had a lot to say about it
themselves.
WHAT PROBLEMS DID YOU ENCOUNTER WHEN
SOURCING INFORMATION FOR YOUR CRITICAL
DEBATE?
DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF
PRIMARY RESEARCH USED TO
COMPLETE THIS PROJECT.
Primary research is essential in some cases as, you can have direct contact through a
survey or interview with your target audience and get their own opinions and
views on the subject. Its also good as it can be tailored to meet the needs of what
you need to know and it provides specific and detailed timely information. Its
has more relevance to your research, it handles internal data and external data.
I had to do at least one method of primary research in my critical debate, methods I
considered was focus group, interviews and questionnaires.
To overcome the problems I may face, such as late replies, people not saying what
they’re thinking or not turning up. I should start doing my research much
earlier so I have time to sort other options else if anything fails.
