MADE is a Massive Artificial Drama Engine created by Rubén Héctor García-Ortega, Pablo García-Sánchez and J.J. Merelo. It uses archetypes and genetic algorithms to model agents and generate emergent stories. The current version is still in development with plans to add more complex agents/archetypes, import/export to game engines, and analyze archetypes through social network modeling. MADE is open source and available on GitHub under an LGPL license.

Mahout is an open source machine learning library from Apache. From its humble beginnings at Apache Lucene, the project has grown into a active community of developers, machine learning experts and enthusiasts. With v0.5 released recently, the project has been focussing full steam on developing stable APIs with an eye on our major milestone of v1.0. The speaker has been with Mahout from his days in college as a computer science student. The talk will focus on the major use cases of Mahout. Big Data - these two words are heard so often nowadays. But what exactly is Big Data ? Can we, Pythonistas, enter the wonder world of Big Data ? The answer is definitely “Yes”. This talk is an introduction to the big data processing using Apache Hadoop and Python. We’ll talk about Apache Hadoop, it’s concepts, infrastructure and how one can use Python with it. We’ll compare the speed of Python jobs under different Python implementations, including CPython, PyPy and Jython and also discuss what Python libraries are available out there to work with Apache Hadoop.

Perceval, Graal and Arthur: The Quest for Software Project Data

n the last years, tools like Git and GitHub have turned essential to support the daily activities around open source software. Such tools act also like data silos, which can be gathered to derive insightful knowledge about a project (e.g., activities, community). However, collecting this data is often a laborious task, which includes: understanding how to access the data, supporting incrementality, resume and retry mechanisms, and defining a scalable process able to cope with large projects. This talk will show how to use Perceval, Graal and Arthur (3 tools under the Linux Foundation's CHAOSS umbrella) to collect project data. Perceval performs automatic and incremental data gathering from many tools related to open source development, Graal provides a generic approach to support source code analysis, finally Arthur allows to execute Perceval and Graal at scale, managing incrementality and possible failures.

GDC2019 - SEED - Towards Deep Generative Models in Game Development

Deep learning is becoming ubiquitous in Machine Learning (ML) research, and it's also finding its place in industry-related applications. Specifically, deep generative models have proven incredibly useful at generating and remixing realistic content from scratch, making themselves a very appealing technology in the field of AI-enhanced content authoring. As part of this year's Machine Learning Tutorial at the Game Developers Conference 2019 (GDC), Jorge Del Val from SEED will cover in an accessible manner the fundamentals of deep generative modeling, including some common algorithms and architectures. He will also discuss applications to game development and explore some recent advances in the field. The attendee will gain basic understanding of the fundamentals of generative models and how to implement them. Also, attendees will grasp potential applications in the field of game development to inspire their work and companies. This talk does not require a mathematical or machine learning background, although previous knowledge on either of those is beneficial.

21 people attended the July 2014 program meeting hosted by BDPA Cincinnati chapter. The topic was 'Open Source Tools and Resources'. The guest speaker was Greg Greenlee (Blacks In Technology). 'Open source' refers to a computer program in which the source code is available to the general public for use or modification from its original design. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations. Over 85% of enterprises are using open source software. Managers are quickly realizing the benefit that community-based development can have on their businesses. This month, we put on our geek hats and detective gloves to learn how we can monitor our computers’ environments using open source tools. This meetup covered some of the most popular ‘Free and Open Source Software’ (FOSS) tools used to monitor various aspects of your computer environment.

Nancy CLI, a unified way to manage automated database experiments. Nancy CLI is an automated database management framework based on well-known open-source projects and incorporating major open-source tools. Using these tools, casual DBAs can conduct automated experiments today, either on AWS EC2 Spot instances or on any other servers. All you need is to tell Nancy which database to use, how to determine workloads and what you want to verify – say, check how some index will help, or compare various values of "default_statistics_target" for your database and your workload. Everything else Nancy will do for you, in fully automated fashion, in the end presenting you detailed results for comparison.

The Materials Project Ecosystem - A Complete Software and Data Platform for M...

In this talk at the CECAM 2015 Workshop on Future Technologies in Automated Atomistic Simulations, I will discuss the Materials Project Ecosystem, an initiative to develop a comprehensive set of open-source software and data tools for materials informatics. The Materials Project is a US Department of Energy-funded initiative to make the computed properties of all known inorganic materials publicly available to all materials researchers to accelerate materials innovation. Today, the Materials Project database boasts more than 58,000 materials, covering a broad range of properties, including energetic properties (e.g., phase and aqueous stability, reaction energies), electronic structure (bandstructures, DOSs) and structural and mechanical properties (e.g., elastic constants). A linchpin of the Materials Project is its robust data and software infrastructure, built on best open-source software development practices such as continuous testing and integration, and comprehensive documentation. I will provide an overview of the open-source software modules that have been developed for materials analysis (Python Materials Genomics), error handling (Custodian) and scientific workflow management (FireWorks), as well as the Materials API, a first-of-its-kind interface for accessing materials data based on REpresentational State Transfer (REST) principles. I will show a materials researcher may use and build on these software and data tools for materials informatics as well as to accelerate his own research.

Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
