For the brave warrior, he is given a prophecy by three witches that he will be king of Scotland. This news leads Macbeth to seize the throne using devious and bloody means, showing how power corrupts a man.
The play establishes a motif of masculinity, which is traditionally defined by ideas of physical strength, assertiveness, loyalty and power or success. Both male and female characters exhibit these traits in deviant and heroic ways.
Macbeth is easily manipulated by his masculinity. He is a war hero who faced an army with his friend Banquo. As a result, his violent deeds are glorified by King Duncan. Once given the prophecy, however, Macbeth shows a lust for power.
Ambition, typically seen as a virtuous quality, becomes his downfall as he concentrates on becoming king.
As Macbeth secretly kills Duncan and his close allies, his ego and paranoia drive him insane. Macbeth represents usually positive attributes of masculinity gone wrong.
While he is considered the antagonist, Macduff precisely turns out to be the hero. Macduff is a faithful thane to Duncan and is suspicious about his murder. He embodies the qualities of patriotism and loyalty because he strives to make Scotland a great country. He is also vengeful after his family is slaughtered by Macbeth’s orders. Macduff reappears when he beheads Macbeth, thus restoring order to his country.
Banquo is Macbeth’s friend and a Scottish thane. Banquo fights alongside Macbeth and is renowned for his bravery. He is the ONLY other character to receive a prophecy from the witches. Banquo openly challenges the witches and does not automatically believe their predictions. Though he is suspicious of Macbeth after Duncan’s murder, Banquo shows loyalty to his friend. Unfortunately, Macbeth is paranoid of Banquo and has him assassinated. Banquo’s last deed of saving his son’s life exemplifies his heroic loyalty.
Malcolm is King Duncan’s son and true heir to the throne. The king’s murder is pinned on Malcolm, so he flees to England to build an army against Macbeth. Malcolm is a leader and is respected by his people.
During a moment of weakness, he shares with Macduff his hesitance to become king, since he is lust-filled and greedy. Macduff convinces him otherwise, which inspires Malcolm to lead the army against Macbeth’s forces. When Malcolm takes his place on the throne, he shows honour to his loyal thanes by making them earls. Power is a motif used by Shakespeare throughout the play.
The plot involves Macbeth trying to gain more power. He considers killing Duncan so that he will become king in his place. Lady Macbeth then convinces him that he should carry through with his plan. Macbeth also wants to kill anyone that threatens his chances of being king, including Banquo.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
1. Macbeth and Banquo, two Scottish generals living under the
reign of King Duncan, were returning home across the bleak
heath. They had just bravely defeated an army of rebels much to
the delight of the king, who was Macbeth’s cousin.
2. Suddenly as they walked over the moor three witches appeared and
greeted Macbeth as Thane (Lord) of Glamis, which he was. The
second witch called him Thane of Cawdor, which he was not. The third
called him King of Scotland. A title held by Duncan
3. Just before the witches disappear they turn to Banquo and tell him that
he will never be King but he would father Kings. The two generals were
stunned but when they reached the palace they heard the news that
Macbeth had been made Thane of Cawdor. (Like the prophecy)
4. Macbeth told his wife, Lady Macbeth of the prophecy and she liked the
idea of Macbeth being King. She was worried because King Duncan
had said his son would be King so she set about persuading Macbeth
to kill the King.
5. Eventually she persuaded him to do the deed. Although he
wasn’t sure about it. To help him Lady Macbeth drugged
King Duncan’s guards,
6. Macbeth set of to kill the King but his conscience played tricks with him
and a phantom dagger appeared before him. Eventually his wife
persuaded him so he took the drugged guards daggers and killed
Duncan.
7. When the guards daggers were found they got the blame for the murder,
however many people suspected the Macbeths. The kings two sons , Malcolm
(remember him he’s important later) and Donalbain were worried that they
would be next for the chop so ran away to England.
8. Macbeth, as the next in line to the throne became King. He then remembered that the
witches had not only said he would be King but that Banquo’s children would become
King not his own. This worried him, so he plotted to kill Banquo and his son. He hired
killers and threw a party for all the local lords. When Banquo was on his way to the party
the hired killers did their job, so Banquo was slain but his son Fleance escaped.
9. The killers told Macbeth That they had killed Banquo but his son had
escaped. Macbeth became worried and started to have nightmares.
One night the ghost of Banquo visited Macbeth. This terrified him.
10. Soon after Macbeth became worried about losing the throne. He was driven by
worry to seek out the witches on the heath. He found them in a cave chanting
round a cauldron. From the smoke of the cauldron three visions appeared.
11. The first, dressed as a soldier, warned him to
beware of Macduff (The Thane of Fife)
12. The second, a child covered in blood, told him no man born
of a woman could harm him.
The third was another child holding a crown and tree
branch. He said that Macbeth would remain King until
Birnam wood came to his castle.
13. Macbeth asked the witches if Banquo’s sons would become King. The cauldron then
sank into the ground and Banquo appeared followed by generations of his family, all were
Kings.
14. Macbeth was now very worried and frightened. When he heard that the Lord
Macduff had joined forces with one of his enemies, Prince Malcolm, he ordered
that Macduffs wife and children were killed. This didn’t make Macbeth popular.
To make things worse his wife who was still guilty about the murder of King
Duncan had killed herself. Macbeth was now totally alone.
15. Macbeth’s problems had only just begun. Prince Malcolm had gathered his men in
Birnam wood. He cunningly disguised them in tree branches and began to attack
Macbeth’s castle. From the walls it appeared as if the whole of Birnam would was coming
to the castle.
Just as the witches has said.
16. Macbeth still thought himself unbeatable and so went to battle. In the middle of
the battle field he met Macduff. During their fight Macbeth said he couldn't be
killed by any man born of a woman. Macduff laughed saying he’d not be born in
the ordinary way but by caesarean. Macbeth knew his time was up.
17. Macduff killed Macbeth, and Prince Malcolm was returned to his father’s throne
as the rightful heir, Macbeth ‘s evil rule over Scotland came to an end.
