Macbeth and Banquo encounter three witches who prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. These prophecies begin to come true, fueling Macbeth's ambition. At the urging of his wife Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan and frames the guards. He becomes king but grows paranoid. He arranges to have Banquo and his son Fleance killed for fear of a prophecy that Banquo's line will inherit the throne. At a banquet, Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost and spirals further into madness and guilt over his crimes.
