WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY POLICY ANALYSIS
The purpose of this study was to analyze accessibility policies and apply them to a real world situation, i.e. the construction of the new Biometrics Data Collection Lab in the basement of
YOUNG Hall (YOUNG 20).

Below are figures from ADA that aided in calculating space
requirements.
For these space requirements we assumed a manual wheelchair for most
situations, but took into account space requirements for a power
wheelchair.
• Non-slip mats
• Accessible Storage
• Equipment located towards front of desks
• Staff awareness of disability issues
• Cords/cables lined along wall or out of the way
FACILITY RECOMMENDATIONS
Through our research of ADA requirements, personally talking to relevant users
(wheelchair users), and calculations we determined a set of standards we find suitable
for this biometrics lab. Before this analysis, we found no conclusive set of lab disability
standards for Purdue.
Having these standards set in place can create a benchmark for other lab facilities at
Purdue.
