Researchers have developed a new technique called "decellularization" to create lungs in a laboratory. This technique uses detergents to remove all cells from donor lungs, leaving behind the airways and blood vessels ready for new cells and avoiding rejection. A Yale University team used this on mouse lungs and managed to decellularize and recellularize rat lungs while keeping the lung structure intact. Lung cultivation in labs is significant for society as thousands need transplants daily, and current transplant patients have only a 10-20% 10-year survival rate for conditions like emphysema and fibrosis.

Tissue Engineering is the development and practice of combining scaffolds, cells, and suitable biochemical factors (regulatory factors or Signals) into functional tissues. The goal of tissue engineering is to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or whole organs.
Cells are the building blocks of tissue, and tissues are the basic unit of function in the body. Generally, groups of cells make and secrete their own support structures, called extracellular matrix.
