2. INTRODUCTION: -
Lucknow Metro is a rapid transit system under construction in the city of Lucknow, Uttar
Pradesh. The commencement of civil works started on 27 September 2014. Lucknow Metro
Rail Corporation Limited a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of
Uttar Pradesh entrusted to build and operate the Lucknow Metro.
Lucknow Metro will have 2 Lines, the North-South line and the East-West line. The North-
South corridor starts at Airport and goes to Munshi Pulia, with a total length of 22.878
kilometers (14.216 miles). The East-West corridor starts at Charbagh Railway Station and
ends at Vasant Kunj. Both lines will intersect at Charbagh Railway Station.
The project will be the most expensive public transport system in the state. Total cost of
phase 1 and 2 will be about $2 billion, of which ₹6,928 crore (US$1 billion) is being spent on
phase 1. Partial commercial operation of Line 1 from Transport Nagar to Lucknow Charbagh
Railway Station a distance of 8.5 km is expected by August 2017.

The designed speed of metro would be 90 km/h (56 mph) while the scheduled speed would
be 34 km/h (21 mph) for North-South corridor and 32 km/h (20 mph) for East-West corridor.
There would be only one depot at Vasant Kunj spread over a land measuring 20 hectares (49
acres). The Amausi Depot has been done away because of its proximity to the Airport and the
subsequent reasons of security and safety.

Construction Methodology: -
Only one methodology is not sufficient for Metro Project as it requires different approach of
construction for various metro line and stations. The methodology also depends on the
geological profile of the area. Largely, Lucknow metro is precast Twin U-girder for elevated
viaduct and cut and cover Methodology for construction its underground stations while
Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) are being used for tunnel excavation. The new Austrian
tunneling method (NATM) is also applied while doing excavation/tunneling in soft soil

Challenges during Project Implementation:-
Project is being executed in a very difficult urban environment,
Being the capital city, all actions are under close security of VVIPS, Media/press.
The project has been approved on the completion cost.
The project implementation period is extremely compressed with a very strict
completion target.
Metro being constructed to world class standards with frontline technology
The sensitivity of the city to be respected during construction.
5. Major Engineering Challenges: -
At Mawaiya Railway crossing, LMRC is carrying out its work for construction of a special
balances cantilever span of 255 meters (central span 105 meters; end span of 75 meters each).
This is one of the most challenging and a critical job which is being executed at a height of
21.5 meters above the ground level while surpassing over a railway crossing at a height of
15.2 meters from the ground level under extremely difficult situations in the middle of the
main road traffic.
At Awadh Rotary, luck now metro has launching a 60 meter special steel span bridge
crossing the rotary over the statue in the middle of the rotary. This bridge which has been
built at a height of approximately 13 meter above the ground will connect both the ends of
the metro viaduct to provide a special seamless connectivity for metro train operation. It is
one of the rare kinds of work being done.

6. Workshop cum Maintenance Depot: - LMRC depot cum workshop has the facility
for today maintenance and overhauling of rolling stock equipments adopting the concept of
condition monitoring of key equipments requiring minimum man power. Depot has a facility
for maintaining 42 rakes of 6 cars.

The state of art facilities includes: -
Auto coach wash plant,
Pit wheel lathe,
Heavy interior and exterior cleaning plant
Covered stabling line with puff based heat insulated roof panel duly integrated with
turbo fans.
Epoxy floor coating to ensure hazard based smooth flow process for maintenance
including providing dust free environment.
Solar power plant of one megawatt capacity is planned on the roof of depot

Depot Control Center (DCC): - the depot control center of luck now metro is being
constructed inside the workshop cum maintenance depot. The DCC will have a backup
control centre that will regulate the operation of the metro trains. It will be the never centre of
LMRC that will control and supervise train operations, monitoring passenger information and
oversee the automatic fare collection system. Trains maintenance personnel, train operator
and the station staff will be conducted with this control centre at all times with the latest
communication system.

8. Training and motivation of visitors/ employees:-
LMRC has established a “C entre of Excellence for training” that is imparting a specialized
training to all its newly recruited staff/officers/ visitors to infuse a sense of belongingness
among them from the very first day of their joining the organizational values of the
corporation.

Benefits of Lucknow metro: -
Can achieved very high carrying capacity 40,000 peak hour peak direction traffic
(PHPDT)
Causes no air pollution in the city
Causes lesser noise level.
Is one of the safest modes of public transport as compared to the alarming level of the
ever increasing road accidents.
Is more reliable, comfortable & safer than road based system
