1. Types of Rural Roads &
Rural Networking Planning

2. Introduction
Rural Road connectivity is a key component of rural
development, since it promotes access to economic and
social services, thereby generating increased agricultural
productivity, non-agriculture employment as well as non-
agricultural productivity, which in turn expands rural
growth opportunities and real income through which
poverty can be reduced.
3. Types of Rural Roads
Other district roads( ODR’s):
Roads serving rural areas of production and
providing them with outlet to market centers or
other important roads like MDR or SH.
Village roads(VR’s):
They are roads connecting villages or group of
villages with each other or to the nearest road
of a higher category like ODR or MDR.
India has 26,50,000 kms of ODR+VR out of
the total 33,15,231 kms of all type of roads.
4. According to IRC (suggested):
• All-weather Roads :
withstands for years without any damage due to weather
ex:- Near cross drainage structures roads to be made by
moorum,kankar,laterite etc. where rain fall < 150 cm/year.
• Fair-weather Roads:
roads not satisfying the minimum requirements of all-weather roads are
further carried out for development .
5. There are several general funds that are used
for roads, apart from special schemes tied to
specific road projects. Thus roads are
repaired using Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar
Yojana(SGRY), scarcity relief funds, and
untied funds devolved by States.
Consequently, it is difficult, if not
impossible, to assess the exact amount that
is being spent for the maintenance and
construction of ODRs and VRs.
6. The objective of these programs was
provision of sustenance support to the
rural people and provide employment
facility
By knowing the importance of rural roads
government has implemented “Pradhan
Manthri Grama Sadak Yojana(PMGSY)
started in 2001 .
Every project undertaken by PMGSY will
be represented with logo
7. Objectives of PMGSY
To provide all-weather roads connecting all villages population
over 1000 by the year 2003 and villages with population 500 and
above by year 2007.
This was achieved successfully and became part of Bharat Nirman
Programme
9. Rural Road Network Planning
Basic Approach :
• For avoiding wastage of funds, optimal usage of materials available
• To ensure every village was near to centre of market , health , education ,
etc.
• Effective implementation of project .
• Taking long range aspect of planning into consideration .
10. Following steps also involved:-
Preparing plan showing all villages, market centres, main roads etc.
Using GIS Preparing the data to study.
Population consideration at selected places to possess the following
magnitude of charges ,to attract traffic
-Individual villages: population /100,subjected to maximum
of 100 units.
-Market centre : 100 units
- Main roads : 80 units
