LocWeb2015 - Reconnecting Digital Publications to the Web Using their Spatial Information

Digital publications can be packaged, distributed, and viewed via the Open Web Platform using the EPUB 3 format. Meanwhile, the increased amount of mobile clients and the advent of HTML5’s Geolocation have opened a whole range of possibilities for digital publications to interact with their readers. However, EPUB 3 files often remain closed silos of information, no longer linked with the rest of the Web. In this paper, we propose a solution that addresses the difficulties of reconnecting digital publications with the Web using the spatial location of the concepts mentioned in the publication. We enrich digital publications by connecting the detected concepts to their URIs on, e.g., DBpedia, and use an algorithm that uses these URIs to retrieve or approximate the coordinates of these concepts. The evaluation of the approximation algorithm showed that almost any concept can be linked to a coordinate, but that the errors can be very high when context information is limited. This means relevant locations for a user can be shown, based on the content he or she is reading, and based on his or her location. This methodology can be used to reconnect digital publications with the online world, to entice readers, and ultimately, as a novel location-based recommendation technique. The document proposes a content sharing scheme called discover-predict-deliver (DPD) for smartphone-based delay tolerant networks (DTNs). DPD employs a hidden Markov model and Viterbi algorithm to predict users' future locations based on mobility learning of locations indoors and outdoors. Evaluation using real human movement traces shows DPD can correctly discover and deliver 87% of contents within 2 hours when only 30% of nodes have the content. The proposed scheme was implemented on smartphones, with approximately 2% CPU overhead and reducing battery life by up to 15%.

Rule-based reasoning systems have the advantage that rule sets can be managed and applied separately, which facilitates the custom configuration of those systems. However, current implementations of rule-based reasoning systems usually introduce a trade-off between expressiveness and performance, which either deteriorates the configurability of the application, or limits its performance in an event-driven system. In this paper, we devise an event-driven rule-based reasoning system that preserves its expressiveness. We devise an automatic nurse call system that is able to handle hard time constraints without limiting the possibilities of the reasoner, and list the encountered problems together with their suggested solutions. We achieve reasonable performance in small-scale environments when evaluating this system using N3 rules and the EYE reasoner. We however observe that a large dynamic database limits the performance of the system, because of the file-based nature of the EYE reasoner. As long as no in-memory reasoning is supported, the performance of the resulting system cannot compete with the state of the art. However, the linear scaling of the proposed expressive solution is promising.

Creating discoverable learning content using a user-friendly authoring enviro...

Digital learning content is becoming more and more commonplace. However, the creation of this learning content is usually done in specialized publishing platforms, that may lock in the content. This prevents the learning content from being discovered automatically, and hinders its uptake. A more general approach for authoring discoverable learning content is needed. We built a user-friendly authoring environment for creating digital publications, enriched with multimedia and interactivity features. This authoring environment outputs the created content in open formats, independent of any publishing platform. We adjusted our authoring environment to create semantically enriched learning content using the RDFa syntax, without the need for manual intervention. This presentation and accompanying video (users.ugent.be/~bjdmeest/lile_demo.mp4) shows how well-structured and well-annotated digital learning content can be created and validated using our authoring environment. The result is a discoverable publication in an open format, ready to be distributed as is, or ready to be imported in existing publishing platforms.

LINKed2015 - SERIF - A Semantic ExeRcise Interchange Format

Spec online at edutab.test.iminds.be/specs/serif. More and more users obtain new knowledge using e-learning systems, and often assess their understanding of this new knowledge using corresponding assessment items. However, the distribution of content items and assessment items in a learning object is tightly bound. To publish assessment items, independently of the corresponding content items, it is required to wrap these assessment items into separate learning objects, which introduces a large overhead. Moreover, current learning objects are closely coupled with their execution environment. A stand-alone and lightweight format to describe assessment items is needed. This way their publication is facilitated and their discoverability can be increased. This presentation proposes some important features for such a format and introduces SERIF: a Semantic ExeRcise Interchange Format, whose underlying data model is based on the QTI data model, and that can be distributed into different RDF serializations. SERIF was applied successfully in three proof-of-concept applications, where we assessed how SERIF is decoupled from the execution environment and extendable to other content and interaction types. In future work, we will exploit its defined semantics for automatic discovery and combination of assessment items.

Our daily life is strongly influenced through decision-making processes based on large amounts of data, of which both the data values as the meaningful (semantic) relationships can be included in knowledge graphs. Given their automatic processing, knowledge graphs must be of high quality on both these fronts. This thesis focuses on both improving data quality, as assessing semantic quality of knowledge graphs. On the one hand, it describes a framework to generate knowledge graphs with extensible data transformations that can clean data ("RML + FnO"), expanded to perform data transformations automatically and implementation-independent ("FnO.io"). On the other hand, it describes a validation approach building on a rule-based reasoning solution ("Validatrr"). This takes into account the semantics used, and enables specific improvements to knowledge graph due to detail root cause explanation of quality problems. Thanks to these contributions, data values in knowledge graphs are cleaned up while generating knowledge graphs, and they can be completed using automatic data transformations on existing knowledge graphs. Our validation approach makes it possible to accurately assess the quality of semantic relationships in knowledge graphs. The combined work makes it easier to improve data quality and assess semantic quality for knowledge graphs, which ensures that knowledge graphs can be used correctly in decision-making processes.

EcoDaLo: closing event

A key source of revenue for the media and entertainment domain is ad targeting: serving advertisements to a select set of visitors based on various captured visitor traits. Compared to global media companies such as Google and Facebook that aggregate data from various sources (and the privacy concerns these aggregations bring), local companies only capture a small number of (high-quality) traits and retrieve an unbalanced small amount of revenue. To increase these local publishers’ competitive advantage, they need to join forces, whilst taking the visitors’ privacy concerns into account. The EcoDaLo consortium, located in Belgium and consisting of Adlogic, Pebble Media, and Roularta Media Group as founding partners, aims to combine local publishers’ data without requiring these partners to share this data across the consortium. This presentation describes the usage of Semantic Web technologies, allowing for a decentralized approach where federated querying enables local companies to combine their captured visitor traits, and better target visitors, without aggregating all data.

However, development efforts to implement these functions are fragmented: a function has multiple implementations, each within a specific development context. Manual effort is needed handling various search interfaces and access methods to find the desired function, its metadata (if any), and associated implementations. This laborious process inhibits discovery, and thus reuse. Uniform, implementation independent access is needed. We demo the Function Hub, available online at https://fno.io/hub: a Web application using a semantic interoperable model to map function descriptions to (multiple) implementations. The Function Hub allows editing and discovering function description metadata, and add information about alternative implementations. This way, the Function Hub enables users to discover relevant functions independently of their implementation, and to link to original published implementations.

A large part of Linked Data generation entails processing the raw data. However, this process is only documented in human-readable form or as a software repository. This inhibits reproducibility and comparability, as current documentation solutions do not provide detailed metadata and rely on the availability of specific software environments. We propose an automatic capturing mechanism for interchangeable and implementation independent metadata and provenance that includes data processing. Using declarative mapping documents to describe the computational experiment allows automatic capturing of term-level provenance for both schema and data transformations, and for both the used software tools as the input-output pairs of the data processing executions. This approach is applied to mapping documents described using RML and FnO, and implemented in the RMLMapper. The captured metadata can be used to more easily share, reproduce, and compare the dataset generation process, across software environments.

This document proposes an approach to declarative data transformations for linked data generation using RML (RDF Mapping Language) and FnO (Function Ontology). The current approaches have disadvantages like being restricted, uncombinable, coupled with implementations, and case-specific. The proposed approach uses aligned declarative schema and data transformations that are unrestricted, combinable, uncoupled from implementations, and case-independent. It has been implemented using RMLProcessor to connect to external parsing functions defined in FnO. This allows data transformations to be reused independently of the linked data generation framework or use case.

Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoring

Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

The proper function of the integrated circuit (IC) in an inhibiting electromagnetic environment has always been a serious concern throughout the decades of revolution in the world of electronics, from disjunct devices to today’s integrated circuit technology, where billions of transistors are combined on a single chip. The automotive industry and smart vehicles in particular, are confronting design issues such as being prone to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Electronic control devices calculate incorrect outputs because of EMI and sensors give misleading values which can prove fatal in case of automotives. In this paper, the authors have non exhaustively tried to review research work concerned with the investigation of EMI in ICs and prediction of this EMI using various modelling methodologies and measurement setups.

Low power architecture of logic gates using adiabatic techniques

The growing significance of portable systems to limit power consumption in ultra-large-scale-integration chips of very high density, has recently led to rapid and inventive progresses in low-power design. The most effective technique is adiabatic logic circuit design in energy-efficient hardware. This paper presents two adiabatic approaches for the design of low power circuits, modified positive feedback adiabatic logic (modified PFAL) and the other is direct current diode based positive feedback adiabatic logic (DC-DB PFAL). Logic gates are the preliminary components in any digital circuit design. By improving the performance of basic gates, one can improvise the whole system performance. In this paper proposed circuit design of the low power architecture of OR/NOR, AND/NAND, and XOR/XNOR gates are presented using the said approaches and their results are analyzed for powerdissipation, delay, power-delay-product and rise time and compared with the other adiabatic techniques along with the conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) designs reported in the literature. It has been found that the designs with DC-DB PFAL technique outperform with the percentage improvement of 65% for NOR gate and 7% for NAND gate and 34% for XNOR gate over the modified PFAL techniques at 10 MHz respectively.
