The environment gives us necessities not only for
livelihood but also gives inspiration.
Art express the artistic feeling towards any aspect of life.
The local materials that are available in our locality help
us hone and enhance our skills and talents in producing
art that can give us popularity and pride.

artist uses and manipulates the
materials to express an idea or feeling
through an art. (strategy)
A medium is defined as the material or
substance used to create an artwork.
Using these materials, the artists
express his feelings or thoughts.

7. Pagbuburda (Taal, Lumban, Laguna)
•The Tagalog word for embroidery is burda. It refers to
both the activity (pagbuburda) and the product. But in the
town of Lumban in the Philippines, burda is more than
that—it’s a way of life.
•Lumban, located in the province of Laguna, has
established itself as the “Hand Embroidery Capital of the
Philippines.” It is one of the oldest towns in the province
and gets its name from the lumbang (candlenut) tree.

9. Puni or palm leaf folding (bulacan)
•Intended to create artful toys for kids.
•Puni is also used to create woven baskets , bags, and fans.
•Palaspas-the common presentation of Puni art seen every
Holy week.
•It is more common to use leaves that are dried treated
and dyed for strength and color.
•These showcase not only the creativity of Filipino but
most especially their ingenuity.

11. Singkaban or bamboo art
• The art of shaving bamboo into artful creations that can be used
as decors for arches or the home.
• Skillful craftsmen patiently shave off the bamboo layer, to create
curls and delicate twirls of their bamboo.
• It is usually a celebrating art. Created for Fiestas, weddings, and
other celebrations that involved the entire community.
• The sense of “Bayanihan” inspire their art form ensuring that art is
appreciated and is accessible to everyone.

13. Taka( Laguna)
The art of taka or Taka-making is not an exclusive Pinoy art. Paper
mache have been around the centuries. In the Philippines, the first
recorded or mention of a created Taka was by a woman named
Maria Bangue in the 1920s.
She has wooden molds that were covered with strips of paper
clipped in the sticky paste. She would later paint them carefully and
present as children toys. Due to fire, none of the original takas were
saved.

15. Sanikulas Cookie Mold Cravings (Pampanga)
The Sanikulas cookies are arrowroot cookies that have the
image of St. Nicholas molded on it ergo the name Sanikulas.
St Nicholas is also known as “The Healer” from illnesses.
Legend says that if you consume these cookies when you are
ill, you get healed and recover in a shorter amount that it
would usually take.

22. •B. Common Techniques in Contemporary Arts
There are three (3)techniques that are commonly used
today in contemporary arts today.
•1. Minimalism. This is an artistic movement that
seeks to take away unnecessary and leaving only
the essential. The artworks that usually use this
technique use a well selected material that is
indispensable in art production.
23. • 2. Found Objects. This means taking something that people
seem to find useless and use it in a unique way in order to
make an artwork. When people seem to think that something
must be thrown away as junk, it is used to tell a story and
create a diverse perspective that we are looking for.
• 3. Large-Scale Art. This is an art that accounts for the creation
of something huge to express diverse perspectives in artwork.
This art is created for public view.
