Editor's Notes
In her 3rd year in AIESEC, she ran for the president position of AIESEC NTU, but she failed. Ironically, all was not lost as instead of taking the back seat, she ran for the position in National Committee and she is now successfully the Vice President of Incoming Exchange.
Our interview with her leader, Grace Chen, who is now the PRESIDENT OF AIESEC Singapore, was particularly interesting. She pointed out that Loan’s position in the National Committee is infact a full time job position, and she is amazed at how Loan is able to juggle her school work and her job in AIESEC. On top of that, Loan handles a few tution students. Grace feels that Loan’s passion for the organisation and desire to develop people drives her to be such a high performing individual and a great role model.
Now I bring your attention to a global AIESEC event held in KENYA in August this year. Some of the National Committee members, including Loan and Grace, were representatives of AIESEC Singapore and their purpose was to contribute and discuss effective strategies with other global delegations, and attain global partnerships with international companies. HOWEVER, disaster struck when the team leader, Grace, fell ill . Loan was the only one who stepped up to lead and motivate the rest of the team on her behalf. Although she was uncertain, Loan led the team to perform way beyond the expectations of Grace and the team and they successfully achieved their goals which they set out before the trip. Interesting to note, during our interview with grace, she felt that Loan’s time in Kenya created a more significant leadership moment than her landslide 11 partnerships. However, subsequent interviews with Loan revealed that she did not agree with Grace. We thus came to the conclusion that none of them of are right or wrong, Its just how people view leadership differently!
To sum it all up, We can use the Hagberg Model of Personal Power to analyse Loan’s power development througout her time. When Loan joined AIESEC, she came in as a member and was powerless. By socializing and expanding her network, she had increased her power by association. After securing the eleven deals and being the Vice President, she gained power by achievement. During the Kenya trip, she was placed in an unfamiliar situation where she needed to do much reflection to make decisions. During this time, she was having power by reflection. When she was part of AIESEC Singapore, her purpose was to groom her followers into better leaders where she had power by purpose. As Loan had already gained much experience from her exposure, she had the expertise and hence the power by wisdom.
In conclusion, As students ourselves, we are able to relate to Loan’s difficulties in juggling school work and external committments. We are inspired by her success as a leader and it has instilled confidence in us, seeing what she has achieved we are forced us to reflect on our own growth and development as young leaders. I would like to end our presentation with a quote from Loan, which our groups has agreed upon to be the most inspiring quote
