2. LIVING FACADES is a project in which all our Secondary
School is involved.
LIVING FACADES
The main objectives of LIVING FACADES are:
Improve the environmental
quality of the IES
Pest control (bats and
insectivorous swifts)
3. In order to achieve these goals we´ll
LIVING FACADES
Use the facade and the entrance porches in a
didactical purpose.
Coordinate the work between departments to achieve
a common goal and facilitate students working in
groups and cooperating in a common project.
4. TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT IS TAKING PART IN
CONSTRUCTING:
LIVING FACADES
Boxes nest for bats and swifts to be placed
in the four terraces of the entrance facade
and in the central semicircular terrace.
Boxes nest for different birds to be placed in
the trees in the playground
5. So, let´s begin with the
technological process
LIVING FACADES
Describing and analysing the need
Searching for information
Generating and selecting ideas
Executing the design
Evaluating
6. DESCRIBING AND ANALYSING THE NEED
The urban development has a great impact on the environment; cities
displace other habitats when building and occupying natural areas. With this
project we will try to compensate that impact on the environment, helping
some birds have a comfortable nest to live in and breed.
7. DESCRIBING AND ANALYSING THE NEED
NEED YOU MUST MEET
Design and make a nest for the birds (bats or swifts)
8. DESCRIBING AND ANALYSING THE NEED
TASK REQUIREMENTS
The material to be used will be wood. You can choose between any of its
types: plywood, chipboard, fiberboard, natural, etc., taking into account
that they are for outdoors and they must be easy to work.
The elements of union: white glue, nails, tips, screws etc., depending on
the material used.
You must provide a way to access the interior of the house-nest for
cleaning and maintenance of its interior.
The reuse / recycling of waste materials will be positively valued. So that
each group of students can go to DIY centers, carpentry and lumber where
normally do not have problems to give students the remnants of larger
pieces of wood. In this way, in addition to saving money, you will learn to
appreciate the importance of recycling.
9. SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION
TASK REQUIREMENTS
Find information about previous solutions to this type of problem and
consider technical aspects that could affect the project.
Brainstorm what each component of the group knows
Ask people who are knowledgeable about the subject
Use books, catalogues, the Internet…
On the internet, for example, you can search for information and
images about bird houses and see how this problem has been solved
by other people.
10. SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION
Now think about the details:
The type of bird the nest is for, its size, habits and preferences, its food
and its reproductive habits. (A swallow is not the same as a stork!)
Stork Swallow Weaver
11. SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION
Examples of information needed:
What types of nest are there?
Which is the most appropriate for the species in our facade?
What materials are normally used by the birds?
What appropriate materials have we got?
How can we fix it?

Wicker nest for canaries
12. SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION
Using information about similar cases you can find
various solutions.
You can use the solution most similar to your case as a
model and adapt it to your needs.
You can also combine various suggestions and create a
new solution.

13. GENERATING AND SELECTING IDEAS
DESIGN AN INDIVIDUAL IDEA
Draw different designs and show them to your teacher and your
classmates
These drawings should clearly show people your ideas.
14. GENERATING AND SELECTING IDEAS
AGREE AND CHOOSE THE BEST SOLUTION
Sometimes we like our own design; sometimes we prefer our classmate's
design. How do we choose?
You can choose the best design considering these aspects of the design:
And remember that you can combine the positive aspects of several
designs to make the definitive product.

Simplicity
