Lithuanian Folk Costume
Lithuanian people are proud of their old customs and
traditions that are depicted in folk songs, dances, crafts,
clothes and traditional cuisine as well.
As for Lithuanian folk costume it has to be mentioned
that the outfit is rich in its history and is a part of cultural
heritage which needs to be preserved. Nowadays the outfit
is an inspiring example of traditional patterns that used to
vary depending on the ethnographic region as well as
social status.
Description of the Costume
A wide range of colours from dark to light,
various designs, textures and patterns can be
noticed in both men and women’s traditional
costumes. The costume was designed of home-
weaved , linen as well as woolen cloth, it was
also decorated with embroidery, amber
accessories.
Men’s Clothes
Men's costume could be very similar from region to
region , nevertheless, it consisted of hats trimmed
with ribbon. Vests were also typical elements to
Lithuanian traditional costumes, men also wore
coats and leather boots.
Women’s Clothes
A typical costume of young girls and with some variations
of women included embroidered aprons with geometric
designs used to cover long plaid skirts. The pillbox hat is an
elememt common to Lithuanian traditional dress as well.
It would be decorated with beads and different patterns and
usually finished with long ribbons that trail down the back.

Folk Traditions at Kalvarijos Gymnasium
Kalvarijos gymnasium seeks for preserving cultural
heritage among school community. For this reason,
the school has an old annual tradition to give a folk
music concert prepared by students themselves.
Usually the concert is held to mark the last day of
festivity before a long period of Advent before
Christmas holiday.
Students are fond of preparing for the festival- they
practice traditional song, dance or even a game.
 They have to introduce their class team to the
audience with the prepared performance.
While observing the others and enjoying the music
students can try dishes of the old folk cuisine as well.
After their performance we often invite local folk
bands to give their concerts with traditional music,
costumes and games.
Sometimes our partners from twin schools are also
invited to represent themselves.
This educational event at Kalvarijos gymnasium
makes us preserve our cultural heritage, teaches
students to respect and tolerate our national identity
under the threat of globalisation.
