second largest downstream oil company which is ranked as 314th on the Fortune list of the world’s biggest corporations as of 2018.
BPCL is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Corporation operates two large refineries located in Mumbai and Kochi.
BPCL entered Maharatna status on 11th September 2017.
The current Chairman & M.D of BPCL is Mr. D. Raja Kumar.
The main products are petroleum, natural gas, aviation fuel etc.
The human power of the company crossed 12000 as of 2017.

Burma Oil Company (Burma Shell) started the oil exploration in India.
GOI taken over Burma Shell and renamed as BPCL India on August 1977

More than 54% of BPCL shares are owned by GOI, 17% by Foreign Portfolio Investors, 9% by BPCL Trusts,
Mutual Funds (7.5%) and rest by individuals.
The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) is co-promoted by BPCL with other Oil Public
Sector Units like ONGC, IOCL and HPCL for giving technical and management support in this industry.
The industry achieved Golden Peacock, Star PSU awards and Technology Excellence award for Cochin
Expansion recently.

History of BPCL.
BPCL started their journey as Burma Oil Company incorporated in Scotland 1886 which become a key player in the South Asian
Market of oil and gas commerce.
The oil and gas exploration in India started by 1886 by McKillop Stewart Company but the major harvesting
of oil started in 1889 by ARTC.
John D Rockfeller and his associates owned major belt of oil production and started Standard Oil Trust
which combined their markets with Burma Oil Company and become the large Burma Shell.
When civil aviation came to India with JRD Tata’s solo flight from Karachi to Mumbai, Bombay Shell
supported with aviation fuel.
In 1951, the company signed agreement with GOI and built a modern refinery at Trombay (Mumbai) which
was renamed as BPCL in 1977.

We are doing our project at BPCL Kochi Refinery (BPCL-KR) located at Ambalamugal established on 1966. The refinery have
a current capacity of 15.5 MMTPA after completion of Integrated Expansion Project.
The Kochi Refinery division of BPCL produces 150,000 barrels per day which includes;
LPG and Superior Kerosene Oil
Petrol and Hi-speed Diesel
Naphtha
Furnace Oil, Light Diesel oil AND Low Sulphur Heavy Stock
Aviation Fuel
Some special products like benzene, Special Boiling Point Spirit, Toluene etc.
Exclusive products are Rubberized Bitumen, Bitumen emulsion and Diesel Additive.

Swatch Bharat BPCL
Project Boond aims to make the seasonally water-scarce tribal region of Western Ghats, water sufficient by
repairing wells and constructing bunds. BPCL's flagship CSR program has fetched Bharat Petroleum
Corporation Ltd the "Excellence Award for Social Responsibility“.
BPCL joins Prime Minister’s Swatch Bharat national campaign by the Government of India, to clean the
streets, roads and infrastructure of the country.

Future Expansion Plans.
IREP (Integrated Refinery Expansion Project) is aimed at increasing the refining capacity of Kochi Refinery from the existing
9.5 MMTPA to 15.5 MMTPA and modernization of refinery to produce auto-fuels complying with Euro-IV/Euro-V
specifications. The units of IREP are designed to be flexible enough to process high Sulphur crudes, which will fetch a higher
margin. This expansion project reached 95% in 2016.
