Evaluating your ideas
Developing your thesis
Organizing and
drafting
Once you have to generate idea for your literary analysis of any poem or
paly. Second step is to evaluate ideas.
 You can evaluate your idea by reviewing notes and prewriting.
Some approaches that will help you to evaluate your idea in better way
• Symbolism refer to the action of characters and events that happens
throughout story that has deeper meaning.
• For example:
Black is used to represent death or evil
&
A broken merrier is symbolize separation
“I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: two vast and trunk less legs of stone
Stand in the desert near them on the sand
Half sunk a shattered visage lies whose frown”
(poem OZYMANDIAS written by P.B.Shelley)
In my words: “Ruined statue” in this poem symbolizes the final state of
man’s vanity
The “lone and level sands” symbolize distractive power of time and nature
“Struggle between opposing forces”
This is the type of external conflict…!
Characterization refer to the choices an author makes to reveal a character’s
personality such as appearance, action, dialogue and motivation.
In my own words: In the story of FROZEN the character of ANNA is
realistic and flat. She didn't change her character through out the
story.
Analyze how the true nature of a character is revealed or how a character
changes in response to circumstances.
5: Explore themes:
Discover the important point or theme the work conveys and back up
your ideas with examples.
For example: in “Harry potter” series there are two fundamental concepts
that drive the story: power of love, Man’s struggle against death.
Your thesis should indicate the element of the
work you will analyze.
Its theme
Characters
Use of symbolism
Examples
For example:
in the play “the piece of string”
whole story circulate around a
man MR. Hubert who pickup a
piece of string from the road but
people blamed him by calling him
a thief.
So the thesis statement “the piece
of string” correctly define that the
whole story .
1. Choose a method of organization
2. Focus your essay on ideas and no on events
3. Write in the present tense
4. Include sufficient examples
5. Write and effective introduction
6. Write a satisfy conclusion

• Remember that your literary analysis should not summarize
the work but focus on your ideas and interpretation.
3. Write in the present tense:
Treat the events in the work as if they are happening now rather
than in past.
For example, write “the author describes in this play….” not “The
author described in this play…”
Use enough examples to support your thesis but not so many that your essay becomes
one long string of examples with no clear main point.
Include line numbers, page numbers, paragraph number put parentheses after any
quotations
The introduction for a literary analysis should engage reader, name the author
and title of the work, present your thesis suggest why your analysis of the work
is useful or important.
Use the techniques similar to those just described for introduction.
Your purpose are to give the essay a sense of closure.
