A literal equation is an equation
where variables represent
values. Literal equations are
used to represent things like
distance, time, interest, and
slope as variables in an equation.
Using variables instead of words
is a real time-saver!
Solve for x:
ax + b = c
- b -b
1. Move b
(the opposite of add is subtract)
ax = c - b
2. Move a
(the opposite of multiply is divide)
3. x is what we are solving for and it stands alone. Done.

• Both are considered Active Learning, a process whereby

discussion, or problem solving that promote analysis,
synthesis, and evaluation of class content (the T.R., 2016)
• Some examples of Active Learning in a classroom are
– Whole Class Discussion, small group discussions, debates, posing
questions to the test, think pair share, short written exercises and
polling the class
