3. Introduction
• Li-Fi Light Fidelity
• Li-Fi is transmission of data through an LED light bulb
that varies in intensity faster than the human eye can
follow
• Li-Fi is a subset of optical wireless communications and
can be a complement to RF communication(Wi-Fi or
Cellular network)
5. History
• Professor Harald Haas, from the University of
Edinburgh in UK, is widely recognized as the original
founder of Li-Fi
• The technology truly began during the 1990's in
countries like Germany, Korea, and Japan
Professor Harald Haas
6. Present Scenario
• Radio spectrum is congested but the demand for
wireless data doubles every year
1.4 million base stations 5 billion smart phones
9. VLC
• The term visible light communication, includes use of
the visible light portion of the EM spectrum to transmit
information
Benefits of VLC:
• Light is a readily available form of energy and it covers
the major portion of the EM spectrum
• Visible light spectrum is 10000 times more compared to
radio wave spectrum
10. Li-Fi vs. Wi-Fi
• Wi-Fi transmits data using radio waves
• Li-Fi transmits data using light
• Wi-Fi is great for general wireless coverage within
buildings
• Li-Fi is ideal for high density wireless data coverage in
confined area and for relieving radio interference issues
14. Working
• If the LED is on, you transmit a digital 1
• If the LED is off, then you transmit a digital 0
• So we require some LEDs and a controller that code
data into those LEDs
• The LED intensity is modulated so rapidly that human
eye cannot notice, so the output appears constant
15. Advantages
• Spectrum is unregulated(free), huge and safe
• Existing infrastructure
• Inexpensive devices
• More secure
• No limitations on capacity
22. Conclusion
• The possibilities are numerous and can be explored
further
• If this technology can be put into practical use, every
bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspots to
transmit wireless data
• With its magic of light it can make our world a greener,
safer, cleaner and moreover a brighter place to live
