Luton Foodbank is not for profit community benefit society, launched in April 2013. It aims to ensure that no one goes hungry in Luton. We provide temporary help to Luton residents in crisis by providing a nutritionally balanced parcel with enough food for three days.

3. Who is Luton Foodbank?
• Luton Foodbank is a Community Interest Company that formed to ensure that no-one goes hungry in Luton.
• In 2013 the government announced that they were to reduce welfare benefits by £28 billion pounds. Luton
were concerned about the impact of these cuts on low-income working families and households.
• Luton Foodbank was created and managed by volunteers. It was set up purely for the benefit of the public.
• On 2nd April 2013, Luton Foodbank officially launched and began providing emergency food parcels for
people in crisis and in poverty in Luton.
• Our aims are to help prevent young people going to school hungry and tackle the cause and effect of food
poverty within Luton.

4. Why Luton?
- Luton is ranked as the 69th (out of 326) most deprived local authorities.
In 2007 Luton was ranked as the 87th most deprived local authority and
in 2004 as the 101st (out of 354 authorities).
- This shows that people in Luton are struggling a lot more now than 10
years ago.
- Luton has several wards in the top 10% most deprived wards in the
country. Some of these of these are in Biscot, Dallow, Northwell, High
Town and Farley.
- Unemployment is on the rise
- There is a lower average income per household in Luton putting it 63rd
out of 326 local authorities.

6. How Luton Foodbank works?

Food is donated at community
drop-off points across the
town. This Food is then
transported to the Foodbank
warehouse for recording and
sorting.
If someone is struggling, they
can approach any of our
referral agencies. They will
assess the client and issue a
food voucher. They will also
provide advice and support,
and signpost them to one of
the other 88 organisations if
necessary.
Food is distributed through
our five different distribution
centres. These are mobile food
points we set up across the
town to make it easier for
people to access. Foodbank
users bring their voucher and
exchange it for a food parcel
which will last them three
days.

We can link them to professional advice and help to solve problems
They are provided with 3 days worth of food
They have to be referred by a referral agency
They can use a Foodbank up to 5 times a year as an emergency
