This often circulates in the community in winter time, although it has arrived a bit earlier than usual this year. It is normally not a serious problem, most adults and children recovering within a few days, but it is unpleasant and inconvenient, especially when it affects a school or a workplace. It is however more serious if it affects ill or very old people in hospital or care homes. Because of this it is important to try to get these small outbreaks over with as quickly as possible. The virus spreads very easily from one person to another and can even be caught from touching contaminated objects like door handles and the toilet flush lever. In order to reduce the chances of it spreading particular care should be taken of cleanliness in the home, and good hand washing with soap and water after the toilet and before handling food. Most importantly is what is called the “48 hour rule”. This states that a person who develops symptoms of the bug (vomiting and/or diarrhoea) needs to be kept away from other people as far as is possible for 48 hours after the last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting. This means that children, for example, don’t just need to stay off school for that 48 hours, but they shouldn’t be playing with friends or taking part in leisure or sporting activities that involve mixing with others until the 48 hours is up.
