This document discusses biocomplexity of small patterned-ground features in Arctic ecosystems. It introduces patterned ground and describes the goal of understanding the complex linkages between frost heave, vegetation, disturbance and climate across the Arctic. It then provides an overview of various patterned ground forms seen along the Arctic climate gradient, from small polygons to earth hummocks, and discusses complexities caused by factors like slope, soil moisture and rockiness. Finally, it distinguishes between desiccation cracking and seasonal frost cracking as causes of small contraction-crack polygons common in the High Arctic.
