Lesson Plan #2: Introduction to Scratch
Standard(s):
1B-IC:19: Brainstorm ways to improve accessibility and usability of technology products for the
diverse needs and wants of users. (P. 1.2)
Materials:
Computer/Laptop with internet access
Scratch Programming application (scratch.mit.edu)
Projector in classroom in order to demonstrate
Objective(s):
Students will be introduced to Scratch, a visual programming language, and learn the basics of
creating simple interactive projects.

Duration: How many minutes do you think you will need to teach this lesson?
60 minutes:
Introduction (5 minutes):
● All of this is while using a Canva presentation that is linked below to navigate the way through the
lesson
● Begin the lesson by briefly explaining the concept of programming and its importance in our digital
world.
● Introduce Scratch as a visual programming language that allows you to create interactive projects
using code blocks.
● Highlight the benefits of Scratch, such as its user-friendly interface and the ability to create
animations, games, and interactive stories.
Overview of Scratch Interface (10 minutes):
● Show the Scratch website (scratch.mit.edu) on a projector or screen and explain the different
sections of the interface, including the stage, sprites, and blocks.
● Demonstrate how to create a new project, choose a sprite, and navigate through the different tabs.
Exploring the Block Palette (10 minutes):
● Explain that Scratch programming is done by snapping code blocks together.
● Introduce the block palette and its different categories, such as motion, looks, and events.
● Demonstrate how to drag and snap blocks together to create a simple script, such as making a sprite
move across the screen.
Hands-on Activity: Create a Moving Sprite (20 minutes):
● Instruct students to open Scratch on their computers or laptops.
● Ask them to choose a sprite from the library
● Guide students through creating a script that makes the sprite move when a certain key is pressed.
● Encourage them to experiment with different blocks and parameters to customize the movement.
Sharing and Reflection (10 minutes):
● Allow students to share their projects with the class.
● Discuss what they enjoyed about the activity and any challenges they faced.
● Reflect on the importance of collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving in programming.
Extension Activity Ideas (5 minutes):
● Provide students with ideas for extending their projects, such as adding sound effects, creating a
game, or incorporating conditional statements.
● Encourage them to continue exploring Scratch and experimenting with different features.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
● Summarize the key concepts covered in the lesson.
● Emphasize the importance of practice and perseverance in learning programming.
● Provide resources for further exploration, such as tutorials or online Scratch communities.
