Lesson Plan 1: Andrew Jackson and the Battle of New Orleans
Essential Questions:
*Why was this battle unique and a big deal?
-Incredible victory (put the War of 1812 – a pretty unsuccessful war – in a more positive light)
-Made Andrew Jackson a hero...prepared the way for his presidency
-Changed political attitudes
Objectives:
*Students will be able to relate the course of the battle
*Students will be able to argue the battle's significance and its affect on the US
Pre-Assessment:
*Ask students to recap what they know about the War of 1812
*If students aren't offering comments, begin asking guided questions:
-What were the causes?
-British impressment on the seas (British Royal Navy taking American merchant sailors and
basically saying “you work for us now”)
-Felt insulted...needed to uphold their honor
-British support of Native Americans which interfered with American expansionism
-British interfering with America's ability to trade with France

-Thought cons of war outweighed the pros
-Annoyed that US had cut off trade with Britain (embargo)...this affected northern economy
(major ports/businesses are in the north)
-DRP: weaker central government, pro-slavery, pro-expansionism, strong break from Britain
-Key events of the war?
-Not much was accomplished (boundaries didn't change)...did not accomplish pre-war objectives
-America invades British Canada...not a success...oops
-British invade DC (burning of the capitol building)
-British bombard Fort McHenry in Baltimore (this is where the Star Spangled Banner came
from) – American victory
