Assignment 1 hand in today
Imagine you are a nurse starting your new job in an unfamiliar area.
Before you start you need to have an understanding of what social factors
might contribute to health and well-being.
On the paper provided create a spider diagram of your ideas.
Starter activity
Please make sure everything is complete, singed and in a plastic wallet
ready to be collected.
We have 2 more sessions before assignment 2.
• P2 – explain different sociological approaches to health and ill health
• M1 – assess bio-medical and socio-medical models of health
Learning outcomes for today
• Outline the biomedical model of health and the sociological model of
health.
• To demonstrate a link between the two models of health and any
approaches.
• To show an understanding when it comes to assessing the models of
health.
Lets begin with the sociological model of
health….
Why is it important to have an understanding about the social and
environment aspects of a person?
The socio-medical model of health believes that to improve health it is
necessary to address the social and environmental causes of illness in
groups within society.
Illness is not solely
located in the individual.
SOCIO – MEDICAL MODEL
• THE MAIN FACTORS:
• DISABILITY; people with a disability are more likely to
be unemployed, with all the attendant health
impacts.
• SOCIAL CLASS: those from a lower social class
experience poorer health. The Black report (1988).
• AGE; as we get older we are more likely to experience
a wide range of illnesses. This is made worse if you
also come from the poorest section of society when
income is greatly reduced.
• GENDER; men and women have widely different
patterns of ill health.
• MEN UNDER 65 ARE 3.5 TIMES MORE LIKELY THAN
WOMEN TO DIE OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE.
• SUICIDE IS TWICE AS COMMON IN MEN AS IN
WOMEN (contradicts feminist approach to health)
• WOMEN EXPERIENCE MORE ACCIDENTS AT HOME
AND MEN AT WORK (could link to feminist approach)
• ETHNICITY; black and minority ethnic groups have
higher risk of mortality from a range of diseases such
as diabetes, liver cancer, tuberculosis, stroke and
heart disease.
• UNEMPLOYMENT; the unemployed have higher levels
of depression, suicide, and self harm and a
significantly increased risk of mortality across all
classes.

Answer the questions on your sheet
The sociological model of health fits in with
approaches that demonstrate inequality in
society…
Which approach do you think this could be?
Marxism and feminism are both known as conflict models as
they demonstrates the inequality in society.
Conflict models believe that some people in society are
healthier than those who are disadvantaged.
Marxism
Rich V’s Poor health inequalities (Marxist approach)
After reading the article, can you think of any examples?
Feminism
Health inequalities between men and women
After reading the article, can you think of any examples?
Recap
What potential factors could affect someone from this social background.
Moving onto the Biomedical model of
health…
Can anyone remember the negative definition of health from the
previous session?
“The condition in which there is an absence of disease or disability”
BIOMEDICAL MODEL
• Identifies ‘health’ as being the ‘absence of disease’ (a negative
definition)
• This model of health was developed in the early part of the 19th
century.
• As people became more aware of how the body worked together to
ensure good health, the bio-medical model became more well
known.
The bio medical model of health assumes that disease is abnormal,
that every illness has a specific cause, and it is experienced in the same
way in all societies.
Do you agree with this?....
Is every illness experienced in the same way in all societies?
According to the Bio-medical model of health; disease
either comes from:
• Outside the body
• Invaded the body and caused physical changes within
the body
• Originated as internal involuntary physical changes
• The biomedical model of health defines diseases
objectively, in accordance with the presence of
recognised symptoms, and believes that the healthy
body can be restored through scientifically based
medical treatment. The human body is likened to a
machine that can be returned to working order with
the proper repairs.
• Doctors and other qualified experts diagnose and
sanction treatment.
• Main purpose of health service is curative – to get
people back to work.
• Disease and illness is explained by biological science.
• It is based in the understanding of how diseases arise,
emphasising risk factors.
• The Bio-medical model seeks to address illness
through surgery and/or drug treatments
• Think of a biomedical approach to treating lung cancer, write your answers
down individually
Which sociological approach does the Bio-Medical Model of
health fit with?
Functionalism
Biomedical model of health and functionalism
• Inness is regarded as being dysfunctional for society.
• If people are ill they cannot make their normal contribution to the
smooth running society.
• This approach focuses upon the individual and curing the disease/ ill
health so that the person can function in society again.
Over to you!
Part of your assignment will involve you explaining and assessing the two models of health which
we have covered today.
Working together on your tables, produce a poster with the following information:
• What each model of health focuses on.
• Links to any approaches
• Asses the pros and cons of each model of health (Minimum 4 assessments per approach).
Highlight your ideas with examples.
You will be feed backing your ideas to the group, so be prepared to explain your ideas and answer
any questions.
Use your phones ONLY for research purposes.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Learners should be provided with an A3 (or whatever is available) piece of paper.
  • #17 Ask leaners to share their ideas and bullet point on the A3 paper from the previous task, feedback to group.
  • #18 Ask leaners to share their ideas and bullet point on the A3 paper from the previous task, feedback to group.
  • #19 Ask learners to come up to the board and write their ideas.
  • #20 This intervention is part of my action research, during this 3 min break I am encouraging the use of mobile phones for catching up on texting and snap chat etc. I may also play some music depending on the learners preference.
  • #24 Ask leaners to raise their hands for the question. Generate a discussion.
  • #31 This part of the session is about encouraging leaners to think independently and introduce them into the whole idea od assessment. I’m planning on playing some music whilst they get on with their posters. I know that the slides will not be on Moodle as of yet so I have set up a blogspot with all the relevant information from todays session. I will be trying to update this regulary so that learners have a ‘one stop’ page to obtain information form. http://psychologyandsociology101.blogspot.co.uk/
