Starter: What is a cell?
Starter
Starter: What is a cell?
An autonomous self-replicating unit that may exist as functional independent
unit of life (as in the case of unicellular organism), or as sub-unit in a
multicellular organism (such as in plants and animals) that is specialized into
carrying out particular functions towards the cause of the organism as a
whole.
What does this mean?
Ready to Learn
Cell definition
Success Criteria
Identify the structures within plant and animal
cells
Explain the functions of these structures
Compare plant and animal cells
Plant and Animal Cells
Keywords
Cell membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell wall, Ribosome,
Activities
• Labelled diagram of animal and
plant cell
•Function of cell parts match up
•Spot the difference between animal
and plant cells.
Key words:
mitochondria, nucleus, ribosome, vacuole, chloroplast, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm

Roles of each structure in the cell
Structure Role
Nucleus Support the cell and keeps its shape.
Mitochondria Controls the activity of the cell.
Chloroplast Respiration occurs here releasing energy.
Ribosome Full of cell sap & maintains shape
Cell wall Controls the movement of substances in & out.
Vacuole Proteins are made (synthesised) here.
Cell membrane These is where many reactions take place.
Cytoplasm Light energy is absorbed & changed into food here.
Which organelles are missing from these plant cells?
How will this affect the cell’s function?
A B C
Complete the Venn diagram comparing plant and
animal cells.

Lets think about it….
• ‘A plant cell is more advanced than an animal
cell because it has more structures.’
• Discuss 6 marks.
Key words: mitochondria, nucleus, ribosome, vacuole,
chloroplast, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm
Plant cells are good,
animals cells are good,
which is best, there is
only one way to find out…
True or False
1. The nucleus controls all the activities of
the cell.
2. Chloroplasts contain the green pigment
chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis.
3. All plant cells contain chloroplasts.
4. Animal cells are smaller than plant cells.
5. All cells have a cell membrane
6. Only animal cells have a cellulose cell
wall.
