1. Cartoon
Analysis
This cartoon was produced by Punch (a British magazine) in 1938. This was during
Anschluss where Austria and Germany reunited. Anschluss had increased Hitler’s
power because he would now have Austria’s power too.
In the cartoon, there is a man dressed as Santa persuading children to come closer to
him so he can push them into his sack.
Hitler is dressed as Santa because you can see his famous moustache. The children
represent countries because the country’s names are on the bed. Hitler is luring the
countries into his sack. He is doing this by coming across as a trustworthy person so
the countries think he’s an honest person but Hitler traps them at the last minute.
Hitler has already captured Austria (he did this by getting the Nazis to watch over
the Anschluss plebiscite) and the other countries are watching him. The more
countries he captures, the more powerful he will become because he will be owning
more. They don’t realise he’s an evil person but will feel foolish when they are
captured. The countries are drawn as small children because children are often
thought as weak and naïve and the countries must be naïve if they can’t see the
danger. Hitler is drawn as Santa because everyone trusts Santa and he wants to trick
the countries into thinking he’s an honest person. Once Hitler has Poland, he will
start another war and capture all the other countries to increase his power

3. Explain how the TOV can be
blamed for WWII? (6 marks)
As we know the Treaty of Versailles had a major impact on Germany and the
rest of the world in the build up to WWll (world war two).
The Treaty solved none of the major problems in the build up to the The
second war Britain and France were very keen to harshly punish Germany
which would make them want revenge.
Hitler only got into polotics because he felt that the Treaty of Versailles was
to harsh and he branded the poloticians who agreed and signed the Treaty
as the 'November criminals'.
It was also the main reason that Hitler came to power because Germany
was sufforing from the 6,600 million pound reperations and thousands of
unemployed workers and hundreds of empty factories he came to power by
promising all unemployed people a job in the army which went down well in
Germany and made him win the next election. This harsh reparations
fine this lead Germany to lending 200,000,000 of the U.S.A this was called
the dawes plan but when the wall street crash happend in 1929 Germany
had to pay all of this money back to the U.S.A this lead to an even bigger
deppresion.
In addition a few years after the Treaty was agreed the world started to
think that the sanctions were too harsh, this meant when Hitler started to
break these rules France and Britain did nothing because they felt guilty of
the punishment they had issued this was called the policy of appeasement.
More over the league failed to deal with crisis’s in Abyssinia and Manchuria
and this may of encouraged Hitler to go into Austria and re militarised the
Rhineland .
4. Explain how the TOV can be
blamed for WWII? (6 marks)
There are many ways as to which the Treaty of Versailles helped to cause the 2nd world
war.
Hitler promised many things to get them out of the mess....
One of these is that Germany’s army was reduced to 100000 men. This not only left
Germany feeling defenceless but it also meant that a lot of people lost their jobs. If there
army was reduced then people would have to be made redundant, putting Germany’s
families in major economic depression. So Hitler promised to give everyone a job by
putting all of the men into the army.
The treaty of Versailles also meant that Germany had to take full responsibility for the
war, this left the Germans extremely angry and some of them wanted revenge. Due to
this the pubic blamed the government and eventually this led to Hitler coming into
power…
The Treaty of Versailles put Germany in major depression! The public looked anywhere
for any amount of hope, which made it only too easy for Hitler to come to power. Hitler
promised many things which the German public believed and they put faith in him. He
promised jobs in the army, to get Germanys pride back and to get revenge on other
countries! By 1933 Hitler was the chancellor of Germany and slowly built Germany up
until World War 2 broke out 2nd September 1939.
Unlike Germany, America profited as during the 1st world war they sold weapons to the
other countries, meaning that they had lots of jobs and money. Due to this Germany
borrowed money from them (the Dawes plan) but then in 1929 the Wall Street crash
happened! This was where almost every company in America lost money and America
also went into depression. 12million Americans lost money and 23000 people committed
suicide in America.
America demanded money back from Germany, putting Germany even further into
depression. Hitler came and gave the Germans faith, so in 1933 the public voted him to
be the chancellor of Germany.
Not only did the Germans hate the Treaty of Versailles but the English also found it too
harsh. They followed the policy of appeasement for several years, letting Hitler get away
with many things and being leniant on him. However this led Hitler to become over
confident and push the boudaries too far and eventually led to him invading Poland in
1939 which started the war.
As a consequence of these reasons, the Treaty of Versailles helped majorly to cause the
2nd world war.
