As an analyst, the start of a problem is a wonderful place. All your time is focussed on discovering what drives the business you work in, or what causes it the most pain. Then you build something that helps to fix the problem. That’s when your life becomes less exciting.
Every problem you solve comes with a reduction in your capacity for the new and exciting, and your time is filled with monitoring, reporting and tweaking.
We want to talk to you about how you can build a team, tools and a culture to allow your analysts the opportunity to focus on the things they do best and enjoy the most – resulting in them being able to fix more problems (and spend some time trying to work out what AI actually is).

The Psychology of Experimentation presented by Nima Yassini, CEO, New Republique
Behavioural economics, choice theory and the modern consumer.
Over the last decade data and a single view of the customer has been deemed the new frontier of marketing. But, is seeing past action helping us understand why customers buy and how they make decisions?
In this session behavioural and experience optimisation specialist and CEO of New Republique, Nima Yassini, will look at how brands might be sabotaging their own success by providing too much choice, uncover the reasons customers don’t buy, and what to do instead. It’s time to forget what you think you know about consumer behaviour and write a new rulebook.

Going from Good to Great with Concept TestingAtlassian
Running experiments in your product will tell you what your customers are doing, but they don't often tell you why they're doing it. So even after experimenting, you can be left wondering: which option would be better to ship? One way that Atlassian has tackled this is by taking the "concept testing" technique to a whole new level. Get a first-hand look into how we run concept tests to extract the right insights – before a single line of code has been written. You'll learn how they can work side-by-side with quantitative experimentation to help you get smarter metrics, and have greater confidence in knowing how to take your product from good to great.

Pin the tail on the metric v00 75 min versionSteven Martin
This presentation shows a different approach to metrics. Instead of listing the Top 10 field-tested metrics, we first talk about goals as prerequisites for metrics. Next, we discuss characteristics of good and bad metrics. We end with walking through an activity called “Pin the Tail on the Metric,” a technique to facilitate the critical thinking needed to determine what types of metrics can help your organization discuss trade-offs, options, and ultimately make better forward-looking decisions.
I've been asked to put together a basic (and therefore relatively quick) introduction to Lean Six Sigma & DMAIC. While it’s not yet finished, I thought I would put it out there for people to comment on. Since the presentation is supposed to be training material there’s more text on the slides than I would prefer, but there are a few exercises and games to get the trainees involved.
I've put the PowerPoint version on my blog:

Is your ladder leaning against the right wall?Stephen Morris
Measurements and KPIs are crucial for our ability to improve. Used in the right way, they provide a vital ability for us to ‘see’ where we are, they enable feedback and allow us to make adjustments to ourselves, teams and businesses. The right measures can even be inspiring and unifying.
However, picking the wrong measures or applying them without consideration can limit performance and promote behaviours you don’t want (or more commonly, didn’t expect).

There’s a massive difference between teams that rock and those that just don't. Not only do the teams that rock deliver some phenomenal, off-the-page results, they are a joy to work with and be part of. These teams act like magnets for more amazing people, deliver remarkable value for customers and inspire action in others.
This session explored the ideas beneath the Open Leader Method(TM), a unique leadership programme for leaders in IT.

Better Living Through Analytics - Strategies for Data DecisionsProduct School
Data is king! Get ready to understand how a successful analytics team can empower managers from product, marketing, and other areas to make effective, data-driven decisions.
Louis Cialdella, a data scientist at ZipRecruiter, shared some case studies and successful strategies that he has used at ZipRecruiter as well as previous experiences. The purpose of this data talk was to enlighten people on how to make sure that analysts can successfully partner with other departments and get them the information they need to do great things.
Joshua Letourneau of LG & Associates presents a gameplan for establishing a Strategic Sourcing Framework at your organization. As always, the endgame is hiring more great-fit talent in less time for less cost than your competition, not to mention retaining them longer while achieving peak engagement.
Have your Agile practices become stale or redundant? Does it feel like your team is just going through the motions? Have team members asked to discontinue “critical Agile practices” and ceremonies?
In Lean product development, the minimum viable product or MVP, is defined as the product with the highest return on investment versus risk. It’s a strategy to avoid building products that customers don’t need or want by maximizing our learning of what is valuable to the customer.
Agile is typically learned through exposure to a series of Agile practices, a recipe of sorts. But what if that recipe goes beyond minimal? Have we replaced heavy waterfall process with heavy Agile process?
This session will interrogate the thinking behind some of the Agile sacred cows like detailed sprint planning, detailed release planning, and even some popular estimation techniques. We will try to identify what is truly needed to be Agile, based on needs instead of prescribed recipes. What is minimally sufficient to start realizing the benefits of Agile?
What is your MVA? It might be different than you think!

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

Data Centers - Striving Within A Narrow Range - Research Report - MCG - May 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) expects to see demand and the changing evolution of supply, facilitated through institutional investment rotation out of offices and into work from home (“WFH”), while the ever-expanding need for data storage as global internet usage expands, with experts predicting 5.3 billion users by 2023. These market factors will be underpinned by technological changes, such as progressing cloud services and edge sites, allowing the industry to see strong expected annual growth of 13% over the next 4 years.
Whilst competitive headwinds remain, represented through the recent second bankruptcy filing of Sungard, which blames “COVID-19 and other macroeconomic trends including delayed customer spending decisions, insourcing and reductions in IT spending, energy inflation and reduction in demand for certain services”, the industry has seen key adjustments, where MCG believes that engineering cost management and technological innovation will be paramount to success.
MCG reports that the more favorable market conditions expected over the next few years, helped by the winding down of pandemic restrictions and a hybrid working environment will be driving market momentum forward. The continuous injection of capital by alternative investment firms, as well as the growing infrastructural investment from cloud service providers and social media companies, whose revenues are expected to grow over 3.6x larger by value in 2026, will likely help propel center provision and innovation. These factors paint a promising picture for the industry players that offset rising input costs and adapt to new technologies.
According to M Capital Group: “Specifically, the long-term cost-saving opportunities available from the rise of remote managing will likely aid value growth for the industry. Through margin optimization and further availability of capital for reinvestment, strong players will maintain their competitive foothold, while weaker players exit the market to balance supply and demand.”
