Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms including unicellular eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Viruses, though not living, are also studied. There are more microbes in and on the human body than human cells. Branches of microbiology include virology, mycology, parasitology, bacteriology. Microorganisms can be beneficial or pathogenic. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that can only replicate inside host cells. Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotes that have diverse shapes and are classified by Gram staining as Gram-positive or Gram-negative based on cell wall structure.
