This document outlines the steps to load bulk data from a CSV file into an Oracle database using a database file system (DBFS). It involves: 1) configuring DBFS and staging the CSV file, 2) creating an external table to reference the CSV file, and 3) loading the external table data into a new table for querying.
Upgrade database using cloud_control Provisioning Monowar Mukul
This document summarizes using Oracle Cloud Control 12c to perform a multiple database upgrade from Oracle 11.2.0.4 to 12.1.0.2. The database provisioning features of OEM12c allow upgrading multiple databases simultaneously in parallel. The process selects the databases to upgrade, configures new listeners, inserts a breakpoint to review and troubleshoot, then resumes and monitors the upgrade process. Validation checks the upgrade results to confirm both databases were upgraded to 12.1.0.2 successfully.
The document discusses moving an existing Oracle cluster to a Flex ASM architecture. It provides steps to convert the existing cluster mode to Flex Cluster mode using the ASM Configuration Assistant (ASMCA). This involves stopping and restarting ASM and other cluster resources on each node, and configuring hub and leaf nodes with direct or indirect access to shared storage respectively. The summaries show the conversion was successful, with ASM instances restarting automatically on different nodes and the database instance remaining available during a test where ASM was killed on one node. It also shows how to change a node's role between hub and leaf.
The document describes the steps to move an Oracle 12c database from a non-ASM storage to ASM storage. It involves:
1. Checking the current database files and parameters.
2. Creating required directories in ASM for datafiles, controlfiles, online logs etc.
3. Configuring the fast recovery area.
4. Backing up the database files and control file, copying them to ASM, and switching to the copies.
5. Adding new online redo logs to ASM and dropping the old logs.
6. Adding a new tempfile to ASM and dropping the old tempfile.
7. Creating a new SPFILE in ASM.
This document provides an overview of copyright and fair use guidelines for educational use of copyrighted materials. Exadata cell metrics include metrics for CPU, disks, flash cache, and I/O recorded by CELLSRV. The Management Server collects these metrics from CELLSRV and is responsible for alerts and some additional statistics. Each cell can be managed individually with CellCLI.
The document discusses Exadata Smart Scan, which offloads SQL processing from the database layer to the storage cell layer. Smart Scan passes only the required data blocks filtered by predicates to the database server instead of all blocks. Testing shows that with Smart Scan, a count query takes 0.05 seconds versus 15.68 seconds without Smart Scan. Analysis of statistics with Smart Scan shows most blocks are filtered at the storage layer with only a small amount of data, about 0.18MB, returned to the database layer.
Mr. Swartz has asked for assistance creating a slideshow presentation on the four stages of cell mitosis for his science students. The presentation should include:
1) An introductory slide with the subject, date, and teacher's name.
2) Four slides (2-5) using the provided graphic images, with each slide containing a title, image, and bulleted text. The text on slides 2 and 4 will animate on entry. The graphics on slides 3 and 5 will animate on entry.
3) Transitions and a color scheme are to be used appropriately, and text/graphics formatted to communicate to students, including explaining the design choices in the intro slide notes.
There are three resource plans - intradatabase, interdatabase, and category - that Exadata uses to allocate I/O resources among databases and consumer groups. The intradatabase plan manages resources within each database, while the interdatabase plan allocates resources among databases. The category plan allocates resources based on the type of work. These plans work together, first selecting a category, then a database using the interdatabase plan, and finally a consumer group using the intradatabase plan. The percentage of resources allocated to each consumer group is calculated based on the allocations in each plan level. IORM ensures consumer groups within the same category and database maintain the same ratio of allocations, even if the absolute allocations change.
Oracle 12c RAC installation was performed using the advanced Flex ASM storage option. This allows Oracle Clusterware and database files to be stored on a shared storage that is not ASM. The Flex ASM storage option provides flexibility to use storage other than ASM like NFS, CIFS, etc. for storing Oracle binaries and database files. The RAC installation and database creation was successful using the Flex ASM storage option.
Installation consists of 5 main steps:
1. Install Oracle WebLogic Server
2. Install Oracle SOA Suite 11.1.1.2.0
3. Install Oracle SOA Suite 11.1.1.3.0 Patchset
4. Install Oracle OSB 11.1.1.3.0
5. Create WebLogic Domain

The document discusses enabling unified auditing in Oracle 12c and testing auditing for Data Pump export and import jobs. It describes steps to enable unified auditing, create audit policies for Data Pump, perform sample Data Pump export and import jobs on the SH.CUSTOMERS table, and view the audit records generated for the Data Pump jobs.
12c database migration from ASM storage to NON-ASM storageMonowar Mukul
1. The document describes the process of migrating a database from ASM to non-ASM storage. This involves taking backups, changing initialization parameters, creating new datafiles and redo logs in non-ASM locations, mounting and opening the database.
2. Key steps include taking an ASM backup, creating a pfile with new datafile and logfile locations, restoring the controlfile, copying datafiles to the new locations, renaming datafiles, and adding new redo logs.
3. After completing these steps, the database is successfully migrated from ASM to non-ASM storage, with the datafiles and redo logs now residing in normal filesystem locations instead of ASM.
1) The document describes how to configure an Oracle 12c database with a Far Sync standby instance. It involves creating the control file and standby redo logs for the Far Sync instance, configuring the necessary parameters, and starting up the primary and Far Sync instances.
2) Issues arise when the Far Sync instance is shut down, preventing redo logs from being shipped to the physical standby. The document resolves this by configuring an alternate destination to directly ship logs from the primary to the physical standby.
3) When the Far Sync instance starts up again, Oracle Data Guard resynchronizes it and returns to shipping redo through the Far Sync instance to the physical standby, with the alternate destination becoming

Ostry analyzes young adult science fiction texts dealing with biotechnology themes like cloning and genetic engineering. She finds they promote traditional humanity by emphasizing nurture over nature. Kaplan reviews Ostry's paper, noting science fiction now reflects real biotechnology realities young people face. He raises questions about what it means to be human amid stories of genetically engineered "super humans". Overall the review discusses how young adult literature has changed to engage with issues of the post-human age.
This document discusses postmodern perspectives on virtual identities and worlds. It explores how in virtual spaces like Second Life, people can take on fluid identities through avatars, blurring boundaries between real and virtual. This challenges traditional concepts of identity and experience. The document also discusses how some view virtual spaces not as an escape from reality but as an extension of ways to express oneself. Businesses are increasingly using virtual worlds for activities normally done in real life, showing how virtual templates can enable serious uses.

Lecture 10: Who's Speaking, and What Can They Say?Patrick Mooney
This document provides a summary of a lecture about analyzing narratives and how they are structured. It discusses several key elements of narrative analysis, including who is speaking in the narrative, to whom they are speaking, when they are speaking, and in what language. It also examines ideas like unreliable narration, dialogue versus monologue, and focalization, or who sees the events in the narrative. The document aims to outline some basic formal distinctions between narratives and how they can be analyzed through studying elements like points of view, voices, and perspectives represented.

Lecture 03: A Gentle Introduction to TheoryPatrick Mooney
This document provides an overview of literary theory and how to write a college-level English paper. It discusses that theory questions common sense views about meaning, writing, and literature. It notes that a good paper includes an argument supported by evidence from the primary text and analysis showing why the argument is relevant. It should not rely on plot summary or obvious claims. The document also provides definitions and examples of literary terms and techniques like metaphor, irony, and genre. It discusses Foucault's views on how discourse is controlled and distributed in a society through various rules and systems of exclusion.

Temple of Asclepius in Thrace. Excavation resultsKrassimira Luka
The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).

If I make the lashes dark
And the eyes more bright
And the lips more scarlet,
Or ask if all be right
From mirror after mirror,
No vanity's displayed:
I'm looking for the face I had
Before the world was made.
— W.B. Yeats, “Before the World Was Made” (ca. 1933)
2. Administrative Matters
● People are working steadily on the study guide.
● Remember that I need to approve you as an editor
before you can edit.
● There's still some low-hanging fruit to be picked.
● In addition to getting an additional quiz score for
completing this assignment, either contributing to the
guide or using it as a study tool will make you eligible
to pick up a few extra-credit points after the final exam.
– Unless you've already picked up extra credit for doing an
extra-credit presentation.
● Questions about the final exam?
● Other matters?
3. Final exam format
● Two parts.
●
First part: identifications (pick six from four categories, no
more than two from any category). Total: 36 points.
– People
– Places
– Things
– Ideas
● Second part: short essay/long short answer (pick two
from approximately five). Total: 64 points.
●
Bonus questions:
– will not have their format discussed in advance.
– will be hard.
– Will give the lowest payoff for effort of any questions on the
exam.
● There will be anti-cheating measures in place.
4. Paolo Bacigalupi (1972–)
● Best known for his short
stories and The Windup
Girl (2009).
● Windup Girl won the Hugo
and Nebula awards for
best novel in 2009; was
also selected by Time as
one of the Top Ten Books
of 2009.
● Two other novels
published, three apparently
forthcoming soon.Bacigalupi in 2012; photo
by Larry D. Moore
5. Is The Windup Girl an SF novel?
… according to these definitions:
● Hard/Soft SF?
● Dystopian? (Utopian?)
● Does it fit into any of these periodic divisions (aside
from the date of publication)?
– “Adventure” period (pre-1920)
– “Modern” science fiction (1920–1935)
– “Golden Age” science fiction (1935–1950)
– “Classic Period” science fiction (1950–1965)
● What other definitions of SF might it fit under?
7. In what ways does the novel …
● … explore the consequences of some transformation to the
basic parameters of existence?
● … function as an exploration of a “mythology of power”?
● … seem to partake of the “literature of ideas” idea of SF?
● … exhibit a concern with Enlightenment-derived scientific
thought?
● … as “scientific thought” is understood at the time it was written?
● … respond to or encode traditionally “liberal” values?
● Progress?
● Tolerance?
● Democracy?
● Rationalism?
8. Again, some characteristics of
dystopian fiction …
● Characterized by a society suffused with mass
poverty, oppression, or other suffering.
● Often extrapolative, based on contemporary
social trends.
● Often provides explicit explanations for “how
things came to be this way” within the fictional
world.
● Often positions itself explicitly as warning about
how contemporary trends may turn out.
● Often intends to provide a critique of (Utopian-
intended) totalizing solutions to social problems.
9. “Cyberpunk” (1984? –)
● A postmodern-influenced SF sub-genre that
focuses on advanced technology (especially
information technology and cybernetics).
● A common theme is the adaptation of technology to
ends its inventors never intended.
– “The street finds its own uses for things.” – William Gibson,
“Burning Chrome” (1981)
● Generally set in the near future on earth, rather
than in distant times and places.
● Often, the setting is characterized by social breakdown,
frequently to the point of being a (usually post-industrial)
dystopia.
● Many cyberpunk novels are also set largely online.
10. ● “high tech, low life”*
“Classic cyberpunk characters were
marginalized, alienated loners who lived on the
edge of society in generally dystopic futures
where daily life was impacted by rapid
technological change, an ubiquitous
datasphere of computerized information, and
invasive modification of the human body.”
— Lawrence Person, “Notes Toward a
Postcyberpunk Manifesto”
(* “Seph” on the Collective Cyberpunk Community Forums)
11. ● Major practitioners:
● Philip K. Dick (A Scanner Darkly, Ubik)
● Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, The Diamond Age)
● William Gibson (Neuromancer)
● Pat Cadigan (Deadpan Allie trilogy)
● Film examples you likely know:
● Blade Runner (1982; more clearly cyberpunk than
the Philip K. Dick novel on which it is based)
● The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003)
● Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
● Hackers (1995)
12. Energy
Yates: “I’ve got kink-springs the size of my fist
that hold a gigajoule of power. Quadruple the
capacity-weight ratio of any other spring on the
market. I’m sitting on a revolution in energy
storage, and you’re throwing it away. […] We
haven’t had power this portable since gasoline.”
(5)
“These genehacked animals comprise the living
heart of the factory’s drive system, providing
energy for conveyor lines and venting fans and
manufacturing machinery.” (9)
13. Generipping
“No graffiti of genehack weevil engraves its [the
ngaw's] skin.” (Bacigalupi 2)
“Most likely, she bribed the white shirts for stamps
rather than going through the full inspection process
that would have guaranteed immunity to eight-
generation blister rust along with resistance to
cibiscosis 111.mt7 and mt8.” (3)
“The boy said the man Gi Bu Sen gives them
blueprints, but he betrays them more often than not.
But his aunt discovered a trickery. And then they
made the successful rip of the ngaw. Gi Bu Sen did
hardly anything for them with the ngaw.” (43)
14. “Pollen wafts down the peninsula in steady
surges, bearing AgriGen and PurCal’s latest
genetic rewrites, while cheshires molt through
the garbage of the sois and jinjok2 lizards
vandalize the eggs of nightjars and peafowl.
Ivory beetles bore through the forests of Khao
Yai even as cibiscosis sugars, blister rust, and
fa’gan fringe bore through the vegetables and
huddled humanity of Krung Thep.” (47-48)
“Somewhere in this city a generipper is busily
toying with the building blocks of life.
Reengineering long-extinct DNA to fit post-
Contraction circumstances, to survive despite
the assaults of blister rust, Nippon genehack
weevil and cibiscosis.” (64)
15. “By then, they were only mopping up. AgriGen
and PurCal and the rest were shipping their
plague-resistant seeds and demanding
exorbitant profits, and patriotic generippers
were already working to crack the code of the
calorie companies’ products, fighting to keep
the Kingdom fed as Burma and the Vietnamese
and the Khmers all fell. AgriGen and its ilk were
threatening embargo over intellectual property
infringement, but the Thai Kingdom was still
alive. Against all odds, they were alive. As
others were crushed under the calorie
companies’ heels, the Kingdom stood strong.”
(120)
16. The calorie corporations
[Anderson:] “Blister rust is mutating every three
seasons now. Recreational generippers are hacking
into our designs for TotalNutrient Wheat and SoyPRO.
Our last strain of HiGro Corn only beat weevil
predation by sixty percent, and now we suddenly hear
you’re sitting on top of a genetic gold mine. People are
starving—”
Yates laughed. “Don’t talk to me about saving lives.
I saw what happened to the seedbank in Finland.”
“We weren’t the ones who blew the vaults. No one
knew the Finns were such fanatics.”
“Any fool on the street could have anticipated.
Calorie companies do have a certain reputation.” (6)
