Sponges are multicellular animals that live attached to surfaces in marine environments. They filter feed by drawing water through their bodies to absorb nutrients while releasing waste. Sponges can reproduce both sexually through internal fertilization or asexually. There are over 5,000 known sponge species. Sponges were some of the earliest forms of animal life on Earth.
