CHILDREN: 3 – 5 years old in the Zebra Classroom.Introduceto 4 children in the morning, and 11 in
the afternoon, and work with 2- 3 at a time.
RATIONALE: The children arebeginningto learn the sounds of the alphabet.Trying to define fine motor
skills and movement.
OBJECTIVES: Concepts, Skills,and attitudes/ dispositionschildren will acquireor practicein this activity
By participatingin this activity the children will:
1. Begin to recognize letters and colors
2. Build finemotor skills.(hand movements, moving through sand)

Introduction Introducethe activity at circle.When time for Centers showthe children what the
activity will be,and demonstrate what they need to do. Show the children they need to use their hands to find the
letters hidden in the sand,and then match them to key next to the bin. Once they have found all the letters have
the child say,“The key is complete!” It will letme know they finished the activity.
Teaching As children do activities,observe,scaffold,and individualizeby saying:
There is a blue letter that has a shapeof a circle.
Can you find the letter that makes the sound MMMMMM?
What letter does your name startwith? B or J?
If a child needs help findingthe right letter, help them by holdingup two blue letters,
and ask which one is a O.
If a child is havingan easy time, have the child putthe letters in the Alphabet order.
2. Closure Show five minute timer, tell them they have 5 more minutes to finish activity. When time is
up, have a student turn off lights,and say “hands up, time to clean up.” Turn lightback on, and sing,“clean up,
clean up, everybody do your share.”
Wow, I cannotbelieve how many of you know the whole alphabet,A to Z! I wonder who can
say itbackwards?
