knowledge will likely have a better lifestyle
• Our students must prepare to be LEADERS
of the future and caretakers of the world.
Today’s Strategy:
Glimpse at a leading school district for 21st Century
Learning
Get some perspectives from history
Question what, how, and where we are teaching in
light of research
Examine that school district’s Critical Competencies
connected to Islamic tradition
Introduce a catalyst for change using 5 Learning
Disciplines

• Created an approach to the 21st Century
• Revealed 9 CRITICAL COMPETENCIES
• 5 LEARNING DISCIPLINES
• Upon further analysis, we see some parallels
to traditions in ISLAM
But first we have to look to history…
How did we get to where we are today?

“The Third
Teacher”
What is your vision for your school of the
future?
What can you do today to make your
classrooms have a better environment for
learning?
Can you empower your students to do this?
What new skills would you have to acquire?
What skills should your students acquire?
Who do you need to help you?
Make a commitment, make a deadline and
write me when you’ve done it!

“The Prophet emphasized the need to
fix in the hearts of children, from as
early an age as possible, a love for the
din.
He himself did this by engaging with
them, playing with them, and
involving them in his practice.”
The objective of 21st century learning is to build
capacity in areas that promote a resilient society
capable of effectively adapting to rapid change…to
prepare students.
FOR JOBS THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN
CREATED, TECHNOLOGIES THAT HAVE NOT YET
BEEN INVENTED
AND PROBLEMS THAT WE DON’T YET KNOW WILL
ARISE
-Future Tense (PEEL S.D. Empowering Modern
Learners)
Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship—Break away
from “employee” mentality. Encourage ownership of business
and socially responsible work for humanity.
Our beloved Prophet’s wife was an entrepreneur and his
mission necessitated him to assume many roles over the course
of his life.
Among them were: politician, teacher, military leader, and
guardian and protector of the Ummah.
Critical Competencies
Collaboration- The concept of “shura” is an excellent example
of this. The Prophet sought the people to help inform his
decisions. Even the Iroquois League, on which the U.S. Congress
model is based, was a confederation of 7 Native American
tribes that jointly made decisions for their people.
Communication- Our Arabic language elicits the richness of
meaning like no other language. Even the Prophet though
encouraged his deputized couriers of The Message to travel
and share with other people. They had to communicate in
ways other people could understand. These days
communication is multi-sensory and new skills need to be
learned to capture that ability.
Learning to Learn- Somehow students can feel
incapable in certain subjects. Why might this happen?
We know self-efficacy plays a great role in learning.
What can we do to create that expectation?
Muslims have been encouraged to learn “from the
cradle to the grave”
Barbara Oakley, instructor of the Coursera course
“Learning to Learn” cites that we should have
Learning clubs at school.
Global Citizenship- “O mankind, indeed We have
created you from male and female and made you
peoples and tribes that you may know one another.
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah
is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is
Knowing and Acquainted” (49:13)
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving- It was the
Muslims who brought mankind from the Dark Ages
toward the Renaissance, and students should take
inspiration to resurrect that scholarship and
leadership to help mankind today. Ignorance will
be widespread in the Latter Days…
The power or aspiration is much greater than the
power of desperation –Peter Senge
The difficulty lies not so much in developing
new ideas as in escaping from old ones –
John Maynard Keynes

Once you have your vision,
how will you share it?
How will you hold yourself
accountable to make the
changes which will help
guide your students?
