3. Four ways by which you can distinguish fragments
and convert them in (complete) sentences
• Look for the subject. If the subject is missing, you will
be left wondering who or what performs the action/ is
being described.
Example:
1. Not allowed to vote because of his foreign citizenship.
2. Beside the library, in front of the new school canteen
4. Four ways by which you can distinguish fragments
and convert them in (complete) sentences
• Look for the verb. If the verb is missing, you will be left
wondering what happens to the subject.
Example:
1. The grade 9 students of The English Academy.
2. The current state of our environment, the source of our
food and other basic needs.
5. Four ways by which you can distinguish fragments
and convert them in (complete) sentences
• Look for both the subject and the verb. Some
fragments do not contain a subject nor a verb. These
types require addition of an appropriate subject and
main verb.
Example:
1. To become more responsible stewards of the
environment.
2. In a pet shop near the city hall.
6. Four ways by which you can distinguish fragments
and convert them in (complete) sentences
• Look for the subordinate clause. A subordinate clause
contains both a subject and a verb, but the use of a
subordinating conjunctions makes it a dependent clause,
and thus, does not express complete thought. Dependent
clauses must always used with an independent clause.
Example:
1. While I understand your point.
2. Although both our campaigns against gender
discrimination were approved.
