This module is a project of the Curriculum Implementation Division particularly
the Learning Resource Management and Development Unit. Department of Education
Schools Division of MOUNTAIN PROVINCE which is in response to the
implementation of the k to 12 Curriculum.
This Learning Materials is a property of the Department Education.
CID, Schools Division of Mountain Province. It aims to improve students’ performance
specifically in Technology in Livelihood Education especially in Beauty Care (Nail

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR THE LEARNERS
Terminologies:
1. EQUIPMENTS: These are permanent items used in manicure that are durable and
do not have to be replaced until they wear out.
2. IMPLEMENTS: These are handheld tools used in manicure which are durable and
must be sanitized (or disposed) of after each use with each client.
3. MATERIALs: These are supplies that are used during a manicure and need to be
replaced for each client.
4. NAIL COSMETICS: These is a nail product that are used to color the nails, to
protect them against damage, to soften and condition cuticles, and to supplement
the nails.
USE OF NAIL CARE EQUIPMENT, IMPLEMENTS, COSMETICS, AND
MATERIALS

absorbent cotton or lint-free wipes.
6. Supply Tray The tray holds cosmetics such as
polishes, polish removers, and
creams.

A nail dryer is an optional item
used to shorten the length of time
necessary for the client’s nails to

Finger bowl is a plastic or glass
bowl specially shaped for soaking
the hand ready for manicure
2. IMPLEMENTS:
The following are the implements used in manicure

An instrument with pointed and
rounded ends used to remove
excess nail polish. Disposable in
nature.

2. Steel Pusher
It is used to push back and loosen
cuticle.
3.Metal nail fail
It is used to shape the free edge of
hard or sculptured nails.
4. Emery board It is used for filing soft and fragile
nails. It is a wooden, sand paper-
like stick with a fine texture on one
side and a coarse texture on the
other side.
Cuticle Nipper It is used to trim excess cuticle at
the base of the nail.
6.Tweezers It is used to lift small bits of cuticle
from the nail.
7. Nail Brush It is used to clean fingernails and
remove bits of cuticle with warm
soapy water.

Cotton is a soft white downy fiber
for dubbing or cleaning the nails
and removing nail polish.

It is used to remove nail cosmetics
from their containers.

disposable bags or trash
receptacles used to contain
rubbish to keep the place clean.
5.First Aid Kit A collection of supplies for use in
giving first aid.
4. NAIL COSMETICS
Below are the different nail cosmetics:

It is mixed with warm water
and used in the fingerbowl.
An antibacterial agent used to
sanitize the client’s hands.
An organic solvent used to
dissolve and remove old nail
polish.
It is a liquid used to soften nail
cuticles and prepare them to
be cut.

These are lacquers applied on
fingernails and toenails to
decorate and/or protect the nail
plate.
10. Base Coat
A primer application that serves to
prepare nail surface for enamel
application. It also gives a good
quality grip to enamel, smoothen
out minor surface nail
irregularities. It prevents the
enamel from chipping.
11. Nail strengthener/
Hardener
It is applied to the natural nail
before the base coat to prevent
splitting and peeling of the nail.
(Optional)
It keeps the cuticle soft and
helps to prevent hangnails. It
gives added touch to the
finish of manicure.
Solvent is a substance used to
thin out the nail polish when it
has thickened.
It is used to remove yellow
stains.
Nail whiteners are applied
under the free edge of the
nail to make the nail appear
white.
It helps the skin retain its
moisture, so hands are not
dry, cracked, and wrinkled.

12. Top coat or sealer
It is a colorless polish applied over
colored polish to prevent enamel
chipping and promotes longer
wearing of nail polish.
13. Liquid nail dry
(Quick dry)
It is used to prevent smudging of
the nail polish. It promotes rapid
drying and prevents the polish
from getting dull. (Optional)
5.Use of nail care implements
Success in nail care service depends on the correct and proper way of handling
equipment and implements. Your client will trust you if they know that you are confident in
what you are doing.
1. Nail File
a.Hold the file firmly with your dominant
hand Position the nail file and tilt it
slightly under the free edge of the nail
and file nails by sliding the nail file
across the free edge to center of nail in
one stroke.
b.Do not file too deep into corners.
2. Emery Board
It is held in the same manner as the
nail file. File the rough surface of the
nail using the fine side to smoothen it
3. Orangewood Stick
a. It is held in the same manner as in
writing with a pencil.
b. To loosen cuticle, work around nail; for
applying cuticle solvent, slightly dip the
cotton-tipped orangewood stick and
work around the base of the nail to clean
under the free edge of the nail, from the
center toward each side, with gentle
pressure so that live tissue at the root of
the nail will not be injured.
4. Cuticle Nail Pusher
It is held in the same manner as in
writing with a pencil. The dull spade side
is used to push back and loosen the
cuticles. Keep cuticle moist using cuticle
remover while working.

5. Cuticle Nipper
Pick up the cuticle nipper by the handles
and turn the cutting edges towards you;
place the bent tip of the index finger over
the top of the shank. Place the thumb on
the side of the handle and the remaining
fingers over the opposite handle.
6. Nail Clippers
Hold clippers with cutting edges
downward between thumb, index, and
middle finger. Press clipper handles by
squeezing them together and removes
excess nail length.
7. Nail Brush
Insert the ring finger and pinky in the nail
brush handle and brush the nails with a
downward motion from the base to the
fingertips to clean the nails and fingers.
8. Nail Buffer
Place the thumb and the ring finger
under the handle of the buffer while the
index and the middle fingers are on its
top and the pinky is on its side.

Reflection
Learning to use equipment and implements properly ensures satisfaction and safety
of your client. As a manicurist, it is your job also to know the use of NAIL COSMETICS and
what ingredients it contains. You also need to know how to apply each cosmetics and when
to avoid using the products because of client’s allergies or sensitivities.

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR THE LEARNERS Terminologies: 1. EQUIPMENTS: These are permanent items used in manicure that are durable and do not have to be replaced until they wear out. 2. IMPLEMENTS: These are handheld tools used in manicure which are durable and must be sanitized (or disposed) of after each use with each client. 3. MATERIALs: These are supplies that are used during a manicure and need to be replaced for each client. 4. NAIL COSMETICS: These is a nail product that are used to color the nails, to protect them against damage, to soften and condition cuticles, and to supplement the nails. USE OF NAIL CARE EQUIPMENT, IMPLEMENTS, COSMETICS, AND MATERIALS 1. EQUIPMENT The following are the equipment used in manicure. Equipment Model picture Uses/ function 1. Manicure Table with Adjustable Lamp Manicure Table is furniture especially designed for giving manicure.

Client’s chair and Manicurist’s chair or stool. 3.Disinfection container Disinfectant container is a receptacle large enough to hold the disinfectant solution in which objects to be sanitized is immersed. 4. Manicure pillow Manicure pillow is a hand cushion that helps a client to keep her hands steady and relaxed. 5. Sanitized wipe container This container will hold clean absorbent cotton or lint-free wipes. 6. Supply Tray The tray holds cosmetics such as polishes, polish removers, and creams. 7.. Electric Nail dryer A nail dryer is an optional item used to shorten the length of time necessary for the client’s nails to dry 8.Finger bowl Finger bowl is a plastic or glass bowl specially shaped for soaking the hand ready for manicure 2. IMPLEMENTS: The following are the implements used in manicure Implement Model picture Function or uses 1.Orangewood stick An instrument with pointed and rounded ends used to remove excess nail polish. Disposable in nature.
  • 7. 3 2. Steel Pusher It is used to push back and loosen cuticle. 3.Metal nail fail It is used to shape the free edge of hard or sculptured nails. 4. Emery board It is used for filing soft and fragile nails. It is a wooden, sand paper- like stick with a fine texture on one side and a coarse texture on the other side. Cuticle Nipper It is used to trim excess cuticle at the base of the nail. 6.Tweezers It is used to lift small bits of cuticle from the nail. 7. Nail Brush It is used to clean fingernails and remove bits of cuticle with warm soapy water. An implement used for smoothening and polishing the nails. Fingernail Clippers . It is used to trim the nails 3.MATERIALS The following are the materials used in manicure Materials Model Picture Function or Uses 1.Disposable towels It is used to cover the clients’ cushion before each manicure. It is also used to dry a client’s hands after soaking in the fingerbowl. 8. Nail Buffer 8. Nail Buffer
  • 8. 4 2. Cotton or cotton balls Cotton is a soft white downy fiber for dubbing or cleaning the nails and removing nail polish. 3. Plastic Spatula It is used to remove nail cosmetics from their containers. 4. Garbage bins/bags Garbage bins/bags are plastic disposable bags or trash receptacles used to contain rubbish to keep the place clean. 5.First Aid Kit A collection of supplies for use in giving first aid. 4. NAIL COSMETICS Below are the different nail cosmetics: Nail Cosmetics Model Picture Functions or Uses 1. Antibacterial soap Copied from TLE LM G7/G8 2. Nail Polish Remover (acetone) 3. Cuticle remover It is mixed with warm water and used in the fingerbowl. An antibacterial agent used to sanitize the client’s hands. An organic solvent used to dissolve and remove old nail polish. It is a liquid used to soften nail cuticles and prepare them to be cut.
  • 9. 5 4. Cuticle oil 5. Solvent 6. Nail bleach 7. Nail whitener 8. Hand cream or hand lotion 9.Assorted colored Nail Polish These are lacquers applied on fingernails and toenails to decorate and/or protect the nail plate. 10. Base Coat A primer application that serves to prepare nail surface for enamel application. It also gives a good quality grip to enamel, smoothen out minor surface nail irregularities. It prevents the enamel from chipping. 11. Nail strengthener/ Hardener It is applied to the natural nail before the base coat to prevent splitting and peeling of the nail. (Optional) It keeps the cuticle soft and helps to prevent hangnails. It gives added touch to the finish of manicure. Solvent is a substance used to thin out the nail polish when it has thickened. It is used to remove yellow stains. Nail whiteners are applied under the free edge of the nail to make the nail appear white. It helps the skin retain its moisture, so hands are not dry, cracked, and wrinkled.
  • 10. 6 12. Top coat or sealer It is a colorless polish applied over colored polish to prevent enamel chipping and promotes longer wearing of nail polish. 13. Liquid nail dry (Quick dry) It is used to prevent smudging of the nail polish. It promotes rapid drying and prevents the polish from getting dull. (Optional) 5.Use of nail care implements Success in nail care service depends on the correct and proper way of handling equipment and implements. Your client will trust you if they know that you are confident in what you are doing. 1. Nail File a.Hold the file firmly with your dominant hand Position the nail file and tilt it slightly under the free edge of the nail and file nails by sliding the nail file across the free edge to center of nail in one stroke. b.Do not file too deep into corners. 2. Emery Board It is held in the same manner as the nail file. File the rough surface of the nail using the fine side to smoothen it 3. Orangewood Stick a. It is held in the same manner as in writing with a pencil. b. To loosen cuticle, work around nail; for applying cuticle solvent, slightly dip the cotton-tipped orangewood stick and work around the base of the nail to clean under the free edge of the nail, from the center toward each side, with gentle pressure so that live tissue at the root of the nail will not be injured. 4. Cuticle Nail Pusher It is held in the same manner as in writing with a pencil. The dull spade side is used to push back and loosen the cuticles. Keep cuticle moist using cuticle remover while working.
  • 11. 7 5. Cuticle Nipper Pick up the cuticle nipper by the handles and turn the cutting edges towards you; place the bent tip of the index finger over the top of the shank. Place the thumb on the side of the handle and the remaining fingers over the opposite handle. 6. Nail Clippers Hold clippers with cutting edges downward between thumb, index, and middle finger. Press clipper handles by squeezing them together and removes excess nail length. 7. Nail Brush Insert the ring finger and pinky in the nail brush handle and brush the nails with a downward motion from the base to the fingertips to clean the nails and fingers. 8. Nail Buffer Place the thumb and the ring finger under the handle of the buffer while the index and the middle fingers are on its top and the pinky is on its side.
