There are challenges in the Thai education system with large class sizes, a lack of qualified teachers, and high teacher workloads. 25% of students are underprivileged and over 300,000 drop out of basic education each year. A proposed solution is a blended learning model using digital content like adaptive textbooks and workbooks, online pre-and post-tests, and teacher training to implement the new curriculum in a scalable way across schools. The program currently partners with 65 schools.

Evaluation of the Use of VoiceThread for Assessment
Although multimodality is increasingly used in teaching, learning and assessment, there is little
in the literature that speaks to how VoiceThread (VT) is used for assessment purposes in higher
education. This study contributes to this knowledge by evaluating how VT was used for
assessment purposes at one Australian university and exploring how lecturers and students
experience the use of VT in assessment tasks. Data were collected through interviews with
lecturers, surveys and a focus group with students and review of the use of the VT tool itself.
A five-part VT assessment process was identified and support structures for staff and students
were mapped. The study found that despite the multimedia capability of VT, text only slides
and text with visual slides were the most common design of student created media, while text,
audio and video commenting were used across the six units in the study. Lecturers primarily
used audio comments and grades in the feedback process. While assessment submission was
not always straight forward, and students required extra support with this unfamiliar tool, the
opportunity to engage in multimodal assessment tasks was received positively by students and
staff as an opportunity to enhance the diversity of assessment and feedback.

What can institutions do to offer the best possible student experience through technology whilst remaining relevant and cost-effective? Rather than investing in ‘the latest innovation’, a student engagement platform that continuously updates with the latest technology (such as voice activation digital assistants or AI) means you don’t have to back a single tool that could become outdated within a couple of years.
This interactive workshop discusses the links between students’ digital expectations vs reality and what universities and colleges are doing about it. There will be contributions from student experience directors, sharing their experience of creating the conditions necessary to enrich the digital lives of students through open, integrated and future-proof technologies.

Improving 180 Blackboard Sites in 180 Days - Christian King & Sandra Thwaites...
At many universities, the Blackboard subject site is the primary interface for the student learning experience. If the site is poorly organised, students do not know how to navigate the learning experience, such as when to engage with what content. If assessment criteria are minimally indicated, the quality of submissions suffers. If no tools are used to foster interaction, the learning experience becomes isolating. Conversely, when Bb sites are effectively designed and maintained, the quality of the student learning experience tends to be high. The quality of Bb sites varies across universities and within programs of study. Students who experience a well-designed site in their first semesters come to expect this standard in subsequent semesters.
Bond University thereby undertook a whole-of-university strategic priority project to improve 180 Bb subject sites in 180 days. Associate Deans (Learning & Teaching) in each faculty selected the sites. The initial quality of the sites varied, with many assessed as initially high quality, meaning that improvement meant moving from strength to strength and focusing on elements such as increasing elements of technology enhanced learning. The co-facilitators of this presentation are the academic developers who worked one-on-one with each of the participating academics. Therefore, from their perspectives, the key takeaways for attending delegates will be:
- Identification of challenges and stumbling blocks, as well as success strategies
- Checklists and professional development materials
- Illustration of before and after improvements as exemplars
- Ideas for increasing elements of technology enhanced learning
- Templates for emails, announcements and other communications
Redesigning assessment and feedback - landscape review and areas for development

An analysis of teachers’ comments about digital textbook
An analysis of Teachers’ comments about the advantages and issues of improving the use of digital textbooks in Pilot Schools
The purpose of this research is to identify the advantages and issues of improving the use of digital textbooks in schools. For this objective, an online questionnaire was conducted to 134 representative teachers (Director or Head Teacher) of digital textbook pilot schools (elementary and middle schools) in South Korea during October 2015, and 119 teachers responded. The questionnaire contained 5 open-ended questions about the advantages and issues of improving the digital textbooks, classes using digital textbooks and managing the digital textbook pilot school. Results of the content analysis of the comments were categorized into 4 topics (development of students, digital textbook’s contents, digital textbook’s function, change of instruction). Each of the 4 topics included comments involving advantages and improvements.
Though there were comments about digital textbooks’ side effects such as distractibility and eyestrain to students, positive feedback regarding the implement of students’ concentration, interest and self-directed learning attitudes outweighed the negative comments. Also, there were affirmative comments about the variety and volume of digital textbook contents and voices demanding more richness and high quality contents. In addition, there were positive and negative comments about digital textbook’s functions such as search, exam, note, etc.. Some of the comments were not focused on digital textbook’s functions and instead focused on keywords such as LMS (Learning Management System), function of control students’ PC, cloud platform. Pilot school teachers commented about diversification of in-class digital textbook usage (Flipped learning, Collaboration learning, Personalized learning, etc.) and preparation (class design, lesson study, etc.).

The world is currently facing a health pandemic and sanitary crisis without precedent in our recent history.
This has affected the normal functioning of education systems worldwide. Nearly all of the 48 countries and economies participating in TALIS are now facing mass and prolonged school closures on all or significant parts of their territory, and UNESCO estimates that 1.25 billion learners are impacted worldwide – i.e. nearly 73% of total enrolments.
This is a major external shock on the operations of our schools and the work of our teachers, who have had to move to distance and digital education offerings within a few days. It is also a major shock and challenge for parents who have been turned into home-schoolers overnight, with no training for this!
This is an odd timing to present the findings of a report depicting the functioning of schools and the work of teachers “before Covid-19”. And although there are lots of interesting things in this report, this is not a priority for today.
Today, I would like to reflect instead on how school and teachers can adapt to these dire circumstances and carry forward their teaching.
Today, I would like to focus on TALIS findings that can help educational systems as they deal with the crisis, and think forward in working out possible strategies to cope with these circumstances.
Today, I would like to convey hope that we can count on teachers to rise to the challenges.
