situations. The ability to apply that knowledge to manipulate one’s
environment or to think abstractly.
A very general mental capability that, among other things, involves

comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from
experience.
The ability to not only acquire and retain knowledge but to also
apply that knowledge as skills to the environment around you.

8. S A N A N T O N I O / 2 0 1 8
The ability to recognize, understand and manage emotions in
ourselves and others.
To discern between different feelings and label them appropriately.
Emotional intelligence should be used to guide thinking and
behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to

What’s the difference?
Intelligence is what I know. Gained
knowledge.
Emotional Intelligence is what I do.
Presentation of knowledge.
Intelligence is a innate – the capacity to
which you can gain knowledge is not up
to you.
Emotional Intelligence is acquired – the
capacity to which you can gain
awareness and control is up to you.

Why is this important?
It is important to understand peoples intelligence, what they are capable
of understanding.
It is just as important to understand peoples ability to cope and what they
are capable of enduring.
Managing yourself
You are your teams “Emotional Thermostat”. Your mood and approach to problems
greatly influence those around you, not just your knowledge of a subject or job.
Managing others
Knowing employees strengths and capabilities, not just their job knowledge, allows
you to better manage them utilizing their own strengths to empower them, challenge
them and trust in them.
