Leadership Has Changed My Life

Leadership
Leadership is summarized as 'the process in which an individual impacts a variety of individuals to attain a common goal'. The goal is attained by
mutual collaboration and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and manages others to reach a specified goal.Leadership has had a
very profound influence throughout my life by affecting my family, friends, teammates, and the overall decisions that I have made. By using my
personal experiences with leadership, I have learned how to use these skills not only on the field, but throughout my everyday actions.
My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the
time I didn't think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started
to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years
after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't
necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and
encouragement. Some of the most valuable leaderships traits that I acquired and fortified are:

Personal Philosophy of Leadership Essay
Personal Philosophy of Leadership
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone
exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person's idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a
member of the President's Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal
philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.
There have been many things that have affected my philosophy of leadership. Something that has affected me as a leader is my values. One...show more

There have also been people who have motivated me to be a leader, especially my high school orchestra director. At the end of my junior year, my
director called me into his office and told me he would be moving me from the first violin section to the second violin section. He said he knew I
was quiet in the back of the first violin section, but he could see I possessed the leadership skills necessary to sit in the front of the second violin
section. This really motivated me to try and make him proud the next year at the front of the section. Many different aspects of my life have affected
my leadership philosophy.
I want others to be able to see my leadership philosophy at work. To do this, it is important that I be able to connect with those I seek to lead, as "The
Relational Leadership Model" states, "Relationships are the focal point of the leadership process" (Komives, Lucas, & McMahon, p. 74). One way
I hope to develop a relationship with my followers is by "Modeling the Way" (Kouzes, Posner, 2008). I will do this by clarifying my values and leading
by example. Clarifying values is important because "To earn and sustain personal credibility, one must be able to clearly articulate deeply held beliefs"
(Kouzes, Posner, 2008, p. 29). By clarifying my values, those I seek to lead will understand my mission and will believe I have a goal in mind.

How Great Leaders Inspire Action Essay
How Great Leaders Inspire Action
I thought the video lecture from Simon Sinek and his personal perspectives and formula to lead and to motivate others was very interesting. Sinek
presented a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership all starting with the question, "Why?" After watching this TED TV presentation, I
wholeheartedly agree with what Simon Sinek has suggested and his assessment in the power of why and its beneficial uses in leadership. Furthermore, I
though his examples of Apple, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Wright Brothers clearly illustrated the benefits in "starting with why".

Primarily, I think that as an organization you raise your attractiveness to potential candidates. For example, if all potential candidates know the
company's mission and vision from the beginning (i.e. charitable donations) may match candidates' causes. In turn, this leads to greater individual
engagement from day one. In addition, the company or organization is no longer about money or a paycheck; it is also a vehicle to support similar
beliefs. The idea of demanding or requiring volunteer work to be completed would be nonexistent. Goodwill would no longer be just how many hours
am I required, but rather looking for ways to enhance the company's vision. Additionally, I think it would reduce turnover, due to the fact there are
more strings tying employee and employer together. On a personal note, as I searched for potential employers, I know that a company's purpose and
vision played heavily into my employment selection. As I tried to choose, I researched not only financial information, promotions from within, and
charitable work just to name a few. In my research, I wanted to find an organization that matched my beliefs. As a result, I found a company that had
similar beliefs that I had about business and sixteen years later, I am still proud to be an employee there.

Essay about How to become a better leader
I believe good leaders have the desire and willpower to become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self–study,
education, training, and experience. I think one of a leaders' main goals should be to inspire their workers into higher levels of teamwork, which can
be acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders should constantly be working and studying to improve their leadership skills. Leadership
is defined as a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more

I also have a hard time saying no if someone is willing to take control and lead the group. Another weakness of mine is communication. I am always
very good at paying attention in class and, therefore, if I hear the teacher give requirements for a project, I just assume that everyone else is paying
equal attention. I need to make a more conscience effort to make sure that everyone is communicating with one another and is aware of what needs
to be accomplished. This ensures the team will be building a healthy relationship and working together. Lastly, I have to remember that everyone is
different and that we all don't approach tasks in the same way. I must use my sense of judgment to assess each person and determine what kind of
work load I honestly think they will complete effectively based on their schedule. If the work is not completed when it is supposed to be done, I
need to learn how to confront that person and ask them why it has not been done and make sure that they understand that this is going to put us
behind. I always want people to like me and this is the main reason that I have a hard to giving constructive criticism and approaching people. These
are a few areas that would be holding me back from being an effective leader.

Leadership Assignment Essay
Introduction
Leadership is the ability to lead a group of people within an organization with certain values and code of conducts in an effective way. The current
situation in the global market, where there is plenty of competition between various Enterprises, there is a huge demand for a useful and a successful
leader. The high complexity of the technology, economic, social and political factors make all the more complicated for the leader to take favourable
decisions. Consequently, the margin for error is so minimal that any wrong decision taken by the leader will put the whole group of people into
precarious situation.

Leadership Traits
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over
time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or
characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking,
intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept
of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders....show more content...
Leadership is an action not a position. With the proper personality, a leader can accomplish many things like knowledge of the organization. Being
able to handle all type of situations shows great leadership traits. According to (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy) the adjustment dimension of the Five
Factor Model of Personality "is concerned with how people react to stress, failure, or personal criticism" and it is important for leaders to develop
their response to this dimension. Leader trait research examined the physical, mental, and social characteristics of individuals. In general, these studies
simply looked for significant associations between individual traits and measures of leadership effectiveness. Physical traits such as height, mental
traits such as intelligence, and social traits such as personality attributes were all subjects of empirical research. (LEADERSHIP THEORIES AND

When reflecting throughout America's history, two people in particular exemplified the essence of true leadership traits, Martin Luther King Jr. and
Nelson Mandela. While others displayed a vast variety of traits, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Nelson Mandela displayed traits of leadership that
stood the test of time, and while today, their traits still influence, as well as affect people in today's society. Throughout his time as political activist, as

Essay on Effective Team Leadership
Effective Team Leadership
The area of team leadership attracts a lot of attention in the modern world because of the need to assemble and deploy diverse teams for the
completion of projects. The future of many corporations relies more and more on the kind of team leadership they have for their projects. This paper
explores a number of facets that constitute effective team leadership.
There are certain essential elements that constitute the definition of leadership. It may refer to the totality of an organization's top direction–giving
functionaries, or the actions applied in providing direction that enables the organization or team to move forward towards a goal. In reality, there are
very diverse definitions of leadership depending on...show more content...
This vision attracts would–be followers to join in the effort to alleviate the challenge. Thirdly, it is characteristic of leadership to possess the skills
required to harness the resources that a group brings together and to apply those resources in alleviating the challenge in order to deliver the vision.
Without leadership, a team lacks direction and cohesion. Leadership is there to solve challenges associated with teamwork and to insure the
attainment of the main objective of the team effort. Leadership reduces the risks associated with a project. This happens because the person or team
providing direction for the project do not get involved in detailed implementation freeing them to see the big picture from which they identify and
reduce or eliminate risks. Leadership increasingly means the difference between a successful project and a failed one despite the availability of
resources. This is because of the role leadership plays in the effective allocation of resources to achieve the projects objectives.
On organization is the legacy of its past leaders. This means that all decisions a leader made while in charge live on through the systems he established,
the opportunities he seized, and the mistakes he made. In team leadership, the outcome of the team effort depends on the skill the leader possesses

According to Yukl (2006), much of the skill essential for effective leadership is learned from experience rather than from formal training programs. A
lifetime learner is accepting that you are never finished educating yourself and by continuing to educate yourself, you become self–aware that learning
is an ongoing process that cannot be completed. According to Yukl (2006), leadership training can take many forms, from short workshops that last
only a few hours and focus on a narrow set of skills, to programs that last for a year or more and cover a wide range of skills.
The leader that I am today is confident but still inexperienced. I still have plenty to learn in order to be the leader I want to be in the future. I want
to be a leader who is always striving for perfection and always keeping an open mind to the possibility of change and new leadership techniques.
Nahavandi states (2006), despite our knowledge, there is also much we still do not know. Leadership as we traditionally know it–command and
control–does not address the rapid social, cultural, and organizational changes that are occurring globally (Nahavandi, 2006). This is why we need to
be always vigilant and open minded to the new theories that are always being introduced in this global society. According to Nahavandi (2006), future

Motivation and Leadership are intrinsically linked in the fact that one allows an easement in the process of the other. Without the ability to use the
mutual relationship of leadership to influence the motivators of followers, leaders stagnate and are limited by their own inability to accomplish all

Osland, et al. (2007) provide a good introduction to three basic motivational content theories. The first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that
proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social
belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most basic (like food and water) to the highest level
(self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there
is little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more basic needs first satisfied. The second content
theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or
affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive connotation or implementation, but it is argued that
people motivated by affiliation make better leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that Theory
X people or employees are inherently lazy and must be controlled and forced to act, whereas Theory Y people are self–controlled, motivated, and
ambitious. Steers, et al. (1996) identify an additional theory of motivation, which builds on Maslow's

My favorite definition of leadership relics Sun Tzu in the Art of War: "The way [of leadership] means inducing the people to have the same aim as the
leadership, so that they will share death and share life, without fear of danger" (Sun Tzu, 2005, p.43). The definition recognizes the collaborative
dynamic that leader and follower share– both share the benefits and risks in its pursuit. Moreover, Senge's work presented me to systems thinking and
understanding the unified wholeness of organizations. This view was reinforced by my study of Neurolinguistic Programming and Neuro–Semantics,
understanding human communications and the way in which we learn to construct our mental maps of the area. I saw conscious decisions to be
freeing and challenging at the same time. This commitment was a challenging as I began to explore the process of leadership outside the hierarchical
power structure that could command action by positional authority. Now as an independent contributor I found myself able to lead freely in a variety
of ways, highlighting the need of influence in the contexts that I was called for.
I mentally stepped back from the situation and took a look at the business, it's internal and external stakeholders. I would foresee the recede and flow

What Makes a Leader? Essay
To me, leadership is more than a title. It is more than just being in charge. Leadership is honestly, learning, listening, and most importantly application.
Leadership means going the extra mile or two, doing the right thing no matter who's looking, staying encouraged and encouraging other even when
times are hard and you have every reason to quit. Leadership doesn't mean you're rich, well known, liked, or respected but it does mean you are a
passionate, caring, and authentic. Leadership means you care about something so much you are willing to risk everything you have for this belief or

You don't have to be sure of every single action but you can't fear the future or change because in order to accomplish your goal change is often
necessary. A bold attitude is a definite must. Leaders will always come against someone or something that opposes what they believe, boldness
will give them the strength to keep going even when the people they lead have start to disappear or they have grown weak. At the first that you are
ready to give up they will abandon ship as the leader it must be a part of your character to be bold and keep going no matter how hard things may

to put this much on the line, face the probability of being ridiculed and disowned by your and the rest of society just maybe you stand for something
that is right and maybe they should too.
These characteristics are all great but to have the ability to truly lead you need conviction. Conviction to keep going you going when your boldness

Leadership and Change Essay
Change is when a person does not follow their everyday routine. They may want to try something different, or be forced to. Change can be for the
good and the bad. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal
with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on
change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change,
others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. Change affects us in the work place, participating on a team, and in society....show more

If a leader took initiative to show others the seriousness of global warming, we could save animals lives. The penguins from the book Our Iceberg

the others moving was a bad idea. The penguins embraced change by having Fred discover their iceberg was in danger. He then told Alice, who is
a penguin with higher authority and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any enthusiasm about
the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies
attention and had their scouts search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the penguins and in the
end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were
originally against the change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new coach to add our staff. The

What Leadership Means to Me Essay
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader
must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able
to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in
their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire

The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion

have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a
leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not
always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is
discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels
that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to

leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not
performing or demonstrating the task at hand correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. However, if that

who earn the award can leave early from work on a day of their choosing. Having an award system that recognizes our staff will reinforce our

The second practice is to inspire a Shared Vision. A leader should be able to imagine a shared vision for the future. Next, a leader should be able to
inspire others to believe in the common vision. Leadership is about engaging with others to solve problems. Leaders need to know what values, hopes,
and aspirations that their team wants to utilize for success.
Leaders are able to inspire a shared vision by imagining the possibilities and finding a common purpose within their team. Currently, my department is

Essay about Women in Leadership Roles
INTRODUCTION
More and more women are rising to the leadership challenge, even in some of the most male–dominated industries. The increase in the number of
women attending college, the increasing number of women in the workplace or starting their own business has demonstrated to men who own
businesses that women can be both managers and mothers, thus showing their male counterpart that women can in fact "do it all".
In this paper the history of women in the workforce will be outlined, as well as the challenges they face. The changing attitudes towards women taking
over family businesses will be looked at briefly, how women lead in comparison to how men lead, and a comparison of their leadership style will also
be discussed.

Those days have since past. As women are achieving higher levels of education and are being employed in more prominent positions, their leadership
roles in family organizations have increased. Many young women are refusing to accept the rule of "primogeniture" (Nelton, 1999). Primogeniture is
defined as a birthright or an inheritance. Although women are making great strides in this arena, there is still the feeling out there that the son should
be considered first and the daughter as a second option, only if there is no son or if the son declines the offer. But, Nelton says that, "young women by
and large feel that if they want to go into the family business, the opportunity is there." In each of the cases described by Nelton, the fathers
encouraged their daughters to become involved in the family business. As well, each father let his daughter run the show once she was named CEO–the
surest sign of support (Nelton, 1999). In more and more families and in business in general, gender is becoming not an issue. As roles increasingly
change on the home front, the business world will soon mirror the changes taking place in the family structure. Nelton also urges women in leadership
roles to not lose sight of the bottom line. She says it is "easy for women to get caught up in the management of people" (Nelton, 1999). She goes on to
say that if you cannot prove that you are also profit–driven, you will never make it to the successor level.

Leadership is the process of motivating others to work to meet specific goals and objectives. A leader motivates others to action. Thus, it is the
motivation of others and their actions that defines a successful leader. In other words, leadership is the art and science of getting others to perform
and achieve a vision. Therefore, leadership is not only reflected in performance, no matter how good that performance is, but in accomplishment. As a
leader one 's focus should be on accomplishing that leadership goals, whether in a personal, community or charitable, business, political, or industrial
forum. In the business world, managers have a great responsibility of leading employees working under them. In order to achieve successful
leadership, a leader or a manager should possess certain principles and essential skills.
This essay will firstly start by defining the key terms, leadership and motivation. Next the essay will give a literature review and move on to

What is Leadership? Essay
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader"
(Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the
ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a
completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking
ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The

could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that

most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote
about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our
leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public,
know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not

Effective Leadership Essay
In today's competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of
management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various
authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically
toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task
of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is

People requires good leadership skills at personal, professional and social level. Personal leadership helps us to determine our desires, strengths and
abilities. It means Knowing what we want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those goals regardless
of what other people think, say, or do. Personal leadership helps us to make our present better and shape a good future. Good leadership is also
important to run a business. Usually, in companies, management stresses more on decision– making skills. They believe a timely and smart decision
will help their company to succeed. They forget that implementation of those decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper
implementation , there will be no results. Like there is a saying that, it's easier to said than done. Similarly, making a decision will change nothing, its
how to get things done in a timely and an effective way will help an organization to accomplish their goals. Leadership is crucial in implementing
decisions correctly and successfully. Each of us understand importance of leadership when it comes to our country. We all try to vote for the best
person in elections because it matters who is in office. President make decisions concerning our lives, country, and the world. As a nation, we place no
greater responsibility on any one individual than we do on the president. Therefore, leadership

Leadership Has Changed My Life

  • 1. Leadership Has Changed My Life Leadership Adam Tobias Davenport University– Student Leadership Leadership is summarized as 'the process in which an individual impacts a variety of individuals to attain a common goal'. The goal is attained by mutual collaboration and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and manages others to reach a specified goal.Leadership has had a very profound influence throughout my life by affecting my family, friends, teammates, and the overall decisions that I have made. By using my personal experiences with leadership, I have learned how to use these skills not only on the field, but throughout my everyday actions. My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the time I didn't think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and encouragement. Some of the most valuable leaderships traits that I acquired and fortified are: Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Personal Philosophy of Leadership Essay Personal Philosophy of Leadership Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person's idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President's Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others. There have been many things that have affected my philosophy of leadership. Something that has affected me as a leader is my values. One...show more content... There have also been people who have motivated me to be a leader, especially my high school orchestra director. At the end of my junior year, my director called me into his office and told me he would be moving me from the first violin section to the second violin section. He said he knew I was quiet in the back of the first violin section, but he could see I possessed the leadership skills necessary to sit in the front of the second violin section. This really motivated me to try and make him proud the next year at the front of the section. Many different aspects of my life have affected my leadership philosophy. I want others to be able to see my leadership philosophy at work. To do this, it is important that I be able to connect with those I seek to lead, as "The Relational Leadership Model" states, "Relationships are the focal point of the leadership process" (Komives, Lucas, & McMahon, p. 74). One way I hope to develop a relationship with my followers is by "Modeling the Way" (Kouzes, Posner, 2008). I will do this by clarifying my values and leading by example. Clarifying values is important because "To earn and sustain personal credibility, one must be able to clearly articulate deeply held beliefs" (Kouzes, Posner, 2008, p. 29). By clarifying my values, those I seek to lead will understand my mission and will believe I have a goal in mind. Leading by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. How Great Leaders Inspire Action Essay How Great Leaders Inspire Action I thought the video lecture from Simon Sinek and his personal perspectives and formula to lead and to motivate others was very interesting. Sinek presented a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership all starting with the question, "Why?" After watching this TED TV presentation, I wholeheartedly agree with what Simon Sinek has suggested and his assessment in the power of why and its beneficial uses in leadership. Furthermore, I though his examples of Apple, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Wright Brothers clearly illustrated the benefits in "starting with why". Primarily, I think that as an organization you raise your attractiveness to potential candidates. For example, if all potential candidates know the company's mission and vision from the beginning (i.e. charitable donations) may match candidates' causes. In turn, this leads to greater individual engagement from day one. In addition, the company or organization is no longer about money or a paycheck; it is also a vehicle to support similar beliefs. The idea of demanding or requiring volunteer work to be completed would be nonexistent. Goodwill would no longer be just how many hours am I required, but rather looking for ways to enhance the company's vision. Additionally, I think it would reduce turnover, due to the fact there are more strings tying employee and employer together. On a personal note, as I searched for potential employers, I know that a company's purpose and vision played heavily into my employment selection. As I tried to choose, I researched not only financial information, promotions from within, and charitable work just to name a few. In my research, I wanted to find an organization that matched my beliefs. As a result, I found a company that had similar beliefs that I had about business and sixteen years later, I am still proud to be an employee there. Loyalty I think when employees believe in an organization, team, individual or department's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay about How to become a better leader I believe good leaders have the desire and willpower to become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self–study, education, training, and experience. I think one of a leaders' main goals should be to inspire their workers into higher levels of teamwork, which can be acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders should constantly be working and studying to improve their leadership skills. Leadership is defined as a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and ...show more content... I also have a hard time saying no if someone is willing to take control and lead the group. Another weakness of mine is communication. I am always very good at paying attention in class and, therefore, if I hear the teacher give requirements for a project, I just assume that everyone else is paying equal attention. I need to make a more conscience effort to make sure that everyone is communicating with one another and is aware of what needs to be accomplished. This ensures the team will be building a healthy relationship and working together. Lastly, I have to remember that everyone is different and that we all don't approach tasks in the same way. I must use my sense of judgment to assess each person and determine what kind of work load I honestly think they will complete effectively based on their schedule. If the work is not completed when it is supposed to be done, I need to learn how to confront that person and ask them why it has not been done and make sure that they understand that this is going to put us behind. I always want people to like me and this is the main reason that I have a hard to giving constructive criticism and approaching people. These are a few areas that would be holding me back from being an effective leader. This summer I was the team leader for my group internship presentation project for Enterprise. The current situation in the global market, where there is plenty of competition between various Enterprises, there is a huge demand for a useful and a successful leader. The high complexity of the technology, economic, social and political factors make all the more complicated for the leader to take favourable decisions. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Leader trait research examined the physical, mental, and social characteristics of individuals. In general, these studies simply looked for significant associations between individual traits and measures of leadership effectiveness. Physical traits such as height, mental traits such as intelligence, and social traits such as personality attributes were all subjects of empirical research. Essay on Effective Team Leadership Effective Team Leadership The area of team leadership attracts a lot of attention in the modern world because of the need to assemble and deploy diverse teams for the completion of projects. The future of many corporations relies more and more on the kind of team leadership they have for their projects. This paper explores a number of facets that constitute effective team leadership. There are certain essential elements that constitute the definition of leadership. It may refer to the totality of an organization's top direction–giving functionaries, or the actions applied in providing direction that enables the organization or team to move forward towards a goal. Thirdly, it is characteristic of leadership to possess the skills required to harness the resources that a group brings together and to apply those resources in alleviating the challenge in order to deliver the vision. Without leadership, a team lacks direction and cohesion. Leadership is there to solve challenges associated with teamwork and to insure the attainment of the main objective of the team effort. Leadership reduces the risks associated with a project. This happens because the person or team providing direction for the project do not get involved in detailed implementation freeing them to see the big picture from which they identify and reduce or eliminate risks. Leadership increasingly means the difference between a successful project and a failed one despite the availability of resources. This is because of the role leadership plays in the effective allocation of resources to achieve the projects objectives. On organization is the legacy of its past leaders. This means that all decisions a leader made while in charge live on through the systems he established, the opportunities he seized, and the mistakes he made. In team leadership, the outcome of the team effort depends on the skill the leader possesses empowering Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Smith University of Phoenix LDR 711– Leadership Theory and Practice Dr. Jane Armstrong One of the most important aspects of leadership is self–knowledge and particularly awareness of your priorities and values. As a leader it is imperative to improve your leadership ability on an everyday basis. Great leaders have great strategic dreams, visions of what could be and what they think should be. According to Yukl (2006), much of the skill essential for effective leadership is learned from experience rather than from formal training programs. A lifetime learner is accepting that you are never finished educating yourself and by continuing to educate yourself, you become self–aware that learning is an ongoing process that cannot be completed. According to Yukl (2006), leadership training can take many forms, from short workshops that last only a few hours and focus on a narrow set of skills, to programs that last for a year or more and cover a wide range of skills. The leader that I am today is confident but still inexperienced. I still have plenty to learn in order to be the leader I want to be in the future. I want to be a leader who is always striving for perfection and always keeping an open mind to the possibility of change and new leadership techniques. Nahavandi states (2006), despite our knowledge, there is also much we still do not know. Leadership as we traditionally know it–command and control–does not address the rapid social, cultural, and organizational changes that are occurring globally (Nahavandi, 2006). This is why we need to be always vigilant and open minded to the new theories that are always being introduced in this global society. According to Nahavandi (2006), future

Without the ability to use the mutual relationship of leadership to influence the motivators of followers, leaders stagnate and are limited by their own inability to accomplish all that must be for real change to occur. In less Rostonian terms (that is, based on Rost (1993)), without a motivated group of followers leaders are stranded and not achieving to a level of excellence. The first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most basic (like food and water) to the highest level (self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there is little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more basic needs first satisfied. The second content theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive connotation or implementation, but it is argued that people motivated by affiliation make better leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that Theory X people or employees are inherently lazy and must be controlled and forced to act, whereas Theory Y people are self–controlled, motivated, and ambitious. Steers, et al. My favorite definition of leadership relics Sun Tzu in the Art of War: "The way [of leadership] means inducing the people to have the same aim as the leadership, so that they will share death and share life, without fear of danger" (Sun Tzu, 2005, p.43). The definition recognizes the collaborative dynamic that leader and follower share– both share the benefits and risks in its pursuit. Moreover, Senge's work presented me to systems thinking and understanding the unified wholeness of organizations. This view was reinforced by my study of Neurolinguistic Programming and Neuro–Semantics, understanding human communications and the way in which we learn to construct our mental maps of the area. I saw conscious decisions to be freeing and challenging at the same time. This commitment was a challenging as I began to explore the process of leadership outside the hierarchical power structure that could command action by positional authority. Now as an independent contributor I found myself able to lead freely in a variety of ways, highlighting the need of influence in the contexts that I was called for. I mentally stepped back from the situation and took a look at the business, it's internal and external stakeholders. I would foresee the recede and flow of people as they enthused about their work, the processes of numerous departments that enabled this organism to be effective. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change, others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. He then told Alice, who is a penguin with higher authority and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any enthusiasm about the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies attention and had their scouts search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the penguins and in the end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were originally against the change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new coach to add our staff. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. As a leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to me, does not need to always know the answer, but believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. People who earn the award can leave early from work on a day of their choosing. Having an award system that recognizes our staff will reinforce our department's shared values. The second practice is to inspire a Shared Vision. A leader should be able to imagine a shared vision for the future. Next, a leader should be able to inspire others to believe in the common vision. Leadership is about engaging with others to solve problems. Leaders need to know what values, hopes, and aspirations that their team wants to utilize for success. Leaders are able to inspire a shared vision by imagining the possibilities and finding a common purpose within their team. Currently, my department is trying to revamp their image. The increase in the number of women attending college, the increasing number of women in the workplace or starting their own business has demonstrated to men who own businesses that women can be both managers and mothers, thus showing their male counterpart that women can in fact "do it all". In this paper the history of women in the workforce will be outlined, as well as the challenges they face. The changing attitudes towards women taking over family businesses will be looked at briefly, how women lead in comparison to how men lead, and a comparison of their leadership style will also be discussed. As women are achieving higher levels of education and are being employed in more prominent positions, their leadership roles in family organizations have increased. Many young women are refusing to accept the rule of "primogeniture" (Nelton, 1999). Primogeniture is defined as a birthright or an inheritance. Although women are making great strides in this arena, there is still the feeling out there that the son should be considered first and the daughter as a second option, only if there is no son or if the son declines the offer. But, Nelton says that, "young women by and large feel that if they want to go into the family business, the opportunity is there." In each of the cases described by Nelton, the fathers encouraged their daughters to become involved in the family business. As well, each father let his daughter run the show once she was named CEO–the surest sign of support (Nelton, 1999). In more and more families and in business in general, gender is becoming not an issue. As roles increasingly change on the home front, the business world will soon mirror the changes taking place in the family structure. Nelton also urges women in leadership roles to not lose sight of the bottom line. She says it is "easy for women to get caught up in the management of people" (Nelton, 1999). She goes on to say that if you cannot prove that you are also profit–driven, you will never make it to the successor level. LEADERSHIP STYLE В– WOMEN Get more content on HelpWriting.net

"Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal a commitment to excellence that will enable you to attain the success you seek". –Mario Andretti Leadership is the process of motivating others to work to meet specific goals and objectives. A leader motivates others to action. Thus, it is the motivation of others and their actions that defines a successful leader. In other words, leadership is the art and science of getting others to perform and achieve a vision. Therefore, leadership is not only reflected in performance, no matter how good that performance is, but in accomplishment. As a leader one 's focus should be on accomplishing that leadership goals, whether in a personal, community or charitable, business, political, or industrial forum. This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978) who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders.
