Leadership is defined as the ability to influence others towards achieving goals. A great leader displays qualities such as focus, confidence, passion, innovation, open-mindedness, positivity, strong communication skills, judgment to adapt their leadership style to different situations, being a good listener, having a vision, and taking action. There are three major leadership styles: autocratic where the leader makes all decisions alone using rewards/punishment; democratic where the leader involves others in decision making; and delegative where the leader gives power to subordinates but remains responsible. Different theories of leadership include trait, behavioral, situational, and contingency theories.

The future is ever-changing, and our leadership needs to change
The future is ever-changing, and our leadership needs to change with it. Cultural beliefs and practices are changing across the globe, people are growing and adapting to new norms. Whereas one culture might have put restrictions on how high a woman could climb in the corporate world even so recently as a decade ago, we now see women becoming CEOs and Presidents of companies they never would have had this kind of access to before. Demographics are shifting and people are becoming more aware of the concept that gender and belief have far less impact on success than do things such as adaptability and ingenuity. Leaders of the future must embrace this change in order to be most successful.
Three characteristics that a leader of the future will need to have are vision, emotional intelligence, and courage. Vision is a key factor in how a leader will succeed because it is inherently different than say, ideas and ambition. Everyone can have a good idea at some point, but a leader has the drive to turn that idea into a vision. They can take that idea and shape it into a vision that can be shared with all, driving a team forward towards a goal that has been set. They can implement ideas in a manner that has lasting effects and results. Without the vision to drive an idea to it’s peak and to mold it into a construct that can be implemented by the team, it is just an idea. Leaders of the future need to take their ideas and drive them to be something more than just “par for the course” or “status quo”. (Perrin, et al., 2012).
A leader of the future needs to have emotional intelligence. This is not the same as empathy or sympathy. This pertains to a leader’s understanding of the people they are leading. By becoming not only relatable but also accessible and accountable to the people they are overseeing, a leader is better able to anticipate needs of the people they oversee. They can configure the people under them into a structure that will produce the desired results of a project. They can anticipate and account for the different learning styles and work ethics of the people they oversee, focusing them into groups or teams that will play off one another’s strengths and weaknesses in a way that will enable growth from everyone. By exhibiting emotional intelligence, a leader is showing that they are committed to getting the best from the people they oversee, and that they understand that not every person performs the same as everyone else.
Courage is another key component of the leader of the future. This does not mean that a leader is unafraid of risk, but rather that they exhibit the courage to take the risk in order to achieve success. Without risk there is no real room for growth, and without growth we become stagnant. Companies fall when their leaders are unwilling or unable to take risks due to a lack of courage. - 5. Focus: It’s been said that leadership is making important but unpopular decisions. That’s certainly a partial truth, but I think it underscores the importance of focus
- 6. Confidence: A leader instills confidence and ‘followership’ by having a clear vision, showing empathy and being a strong coach
- 7. Passion: You must love what you do. In order to be truly successful at something, you must obsess over it and let it consume you. No matter how successful your business might become, you are never satisfied and constantly push to do something bigger, better and greater
- 8. Innovation: In any system with finite resources and infinite expansion of population—like your business, or like all of humanity—innovation is essential for not only success but also survival. The innovators are our leaders
- 9. Open-mindedness: One of the biggest myths is that good business leaders are great visionaries with dogged determination to stick to their goals no matter what. It’s nonsense. The truth is, leaders need to keep an open mind while being flexible, and adjust if necessary. When in the startup phase of a company, planning is highly overrated and goals are not static. Your commitment should be to invest, develop and maintain great relationships
- 10. Positivity : In order to achieve greatness, you must create a culture of optimism. There will be many ups and downs, but the prevalence of positivity will keep the company going. But be warned: This requires fearlessness. You have to truly believe in making the impossible possible
- 11. Communication: A Successful leader has the ability to communicate well. If people aren’t aware of your expectations, and they fall short, it’s really your fault for not expressing it to them
- 12. Situation: We must use our judgment to decide the best course of action and the leadership style needed for each situation. What we do in one situation will not always work in another.

- 17. Autocratic The authoritarian leader makes decisions alone as power is centralized in one person. Decisions are enforced using rewards and the fear of punishment. it is an abusive, unprofessional style called “bossing people around.”
- 18. Democratic: The participative leader include one or more employees in the decision making process. Communication flow freely; suggestions are made in both directions. The participation encourages member commitment to the final decision.
- 19. Delegative: The free-rein leader gives power to subordinates to make the decisions. However, the leader is still responsible for the decisions that are made. This is used when employees are able to analyse the situation. Deligative style is generally not useful.
