2. LAUNCHING APPLIANCES
• Types of davits used for launching and
recovery of survival craft.
I RADIAL DAVIT: Radial Davits are now
obsolete but may still be found on very old
vessel. These davits are equipped with manila
rope fall. The crew should consist of a
coxswain and 9 men. Boats may be launched
outboard either bow first or stern first.
3. LAUNCHING APPLIANCES
• LUFFING DAVITS
• Luffing davits are twin fall davits for launching and
recovery of survival craft. In this system the life boat is
kept on chocks bolted to the deck and secured with
gripes. After removing the gripes the lifeboat is lifted
to the required height and then the davits are luffed
out with the help of telescopic rod and the worm gear
and lowered to the embarkation deck. Turn the davit in
close to the embarkation deck level for embarkation
purpose. On embarkation davit has to be luffed out.
After ensuring all clear below, the life boat is lowered
to water line.
4. MIRANDA DAVITS
• In Miranda davit a different approach has been made
for launching the lifeboat by means of gravity. The life
boat is contained and attached to a cradle that is
hoisted to a davit head by means of two single wire
ropes. Therefore there are no floating blocks. Lifeboat
is attached to the cradle of Miranda davits by means of
two short wire strops between the cradle head and
boats lifting hooks. The quick release device for release
of the boat is attached to the cradle and not to the
lifeboat. The advantage of Miranda davit is that the
lifeboat can be launched even when the ship has an
adverse list of 30 degrees and 15 degree of trim
forward or aft.
5. GRAVITY DAVIT
• Gravity davits are any davits which use the weight of the boat to do
the work required to launch the boat over side. They have a
carriage mounted on roller track ways, which are fixed either to the
deck or overhead. The boat is launched by the lifting of a brake
handle, The break is required to be applied itself automatically
immediately the handle is released by the break operator. The rate
of the boats descent is controlled by an independent centrifugal
brake. These davits are all fitted with wire rope falls and winches.
Gravity davits are required to be capable of launching a survival
craft or rescue boat against an adverse list of 20° any side and 100
trim forward or aft. They are required to be fitted with tricing
pendants to keep the survival craft along side and bowsing tackles
to replace the tricing pendants to keep the survival craft along side.
6. GRAVITY DAVIT
• Gravity davits are provided with the gripes as a
safety device. They are so adjusted that while
gripes are on, the davit cannot operate. In
additi9n, holes are normally provided into which
a bolt can be shipped to prevent the, davits being
inadvertently operated in port. These bolts,
known as
• “HARBOUR SAFETY PINS” are always to be
unshipped before the vessel proceeds to sea so
that the boats are at all the timely ready for
immediate use.
