Work through
- two plenary meetings, with official delegates from
EU MS, associated countries (+ voluntary countries)
- a steering group, meeting every two months
- and working groups : Collaborative WG and
Strategic WG

CASA - Added Value
Driving forces behind establishing this CSA was the wish to
provide
Added Value and Improved Quality for Greater Impact,
And greater involvement of countries (esp. new MS)
This should be done by supporting SCAR through
facilitation and coordination of the working groups, thus
helping deliver results of improved quality leading to
greater impact of SCAR activities.

4. Update on ARCH
• Joint EIARD – SCAR Strategic Working Group
focussing on global challenges
• Initiated in Brussels September 2013
• 3-4 meetings per year usually held in Brussels
• Current Co-chairs from Fr + NL
• Members cover their own costs
• Some support to the Coordination Team from
resp. NL, GIZ and FIN

5. About ARCH
ARCH
• aims at supporting improvements in coordination of policy
dialogue, research programming, and joint funding mechanisms at
national, European and at global levels.
• supports the development of models of governance for delivering
sustainable agriculture and food from local to supra-national scales,
leading to greater impact.
• members have a solid understanding of the similarities and
differences in needs in Europe and developing countries.
This is done through
• Studies and Workshops (26/27 January 2016, Brussels; 11 October
2016, Brussels)
• Contribution to European Commission consultations

8. 2017 Perspectives (1/2)
1./ Socio-economic impacts of Agricultural Research in Europe and developing
countries
Activity: follow up to the workshop co organized with Impress and Impresa projects
and AKIS WG, on 18 November 2016; producing an ARCH (or SCAR ) Policy Brief.
ARCH goals: going from what to how: how to apply a multi actor approach and a user
led process in cooperation with low and middle income countries. How to work on
short and long term together. How to launch calls for a coordinated "bunch" of projects
instead of individual projects, etc
2./ Consumers of the future. Reducing the impact, locally and globally, of European
consumption patterns on climate and natural resources while achieving healthy and
sustainable food systems.
Activities:
a. joint meeting SWG ARCH and Food Systems, Date: January 2017 (tbc)
b. Study on the international dimension of European food systems, the role of current
actors, opportunities for new actors, outline for a policy framework. January-June
2017.
c. Joint workshop ARCH-Food Systems. Date: October 2017 (World Food Day?)
ARCH goals: awareness raising on the global dimension of European food systems,
pathway for cooperation between EU and international programmes (CGIAR, SUN, etc).

3. / The contribution of European research to SDGs. How to mobilize
our knowledge towards higher impact on SDGs. Identifying possible
conflicts of interest. Recommendations for joint AR-ARD research
policy.
Activity: workshop ARCH and INIA-Spain, February-March 2017.
ARCH goals: designing transparent pathways for joint research and
innovation on SDGs
4./ Combatting climate change. Role of forests and agroforestry in
Europe and in other regions of the world for both adaptation and
mitigation of climate change.
Activity: joint workshop with SWG Forest (and Bioeconomy?) in 2018.
ARCH goals: opportunities for joint research with global actors, joint
learning
