• Joint EIARD – SCAR Strategic Working Group
focussing on global challenges
• Initiated in Brussels September 2013
• 3-4 meetings per year usually held in Brussels
• Current Co-chairs from Fr + NL
• Members cover their own costs
• Some support to the Coordination Team from
resp. NL, GIZ and FIN

• Better coordination and improved linkages
between Agricultural Research (AR) and
Agricultural Research for Development (ARD).
• Global partnerships for sustainable development
Although AR and ARD increasingly overlap, in particular when
addressing global challenges around sustainable development,
most activities are still fragmented. Alignment of AR and ARD will
be mutually beneficial.

partners for Agricultural Research and
Agricultural Research for Development will
strengthen Europe’s contribution to solving the
global challenges and SDGs related to
agriculture and food.

• Demand for agricultural production
worldwide will increase in next few decades
• Natural resources, such as soils and water, that
underpin agricultural production, face strong pressures
• Agriculture increasingly affected by threats and shocks
which are mostly attributed to climate change
• Research and Innovation in sustainable agriculture
and food nutrition security is essential to addressing
the major challenges of poverty and hunger
• Need to develop models of governance for
delivering sustainable agriculture and nutrition
from local to supra-national scales
7. About ARCH
ARCH
• aims at supporting improvements in coordination of policy
dialogue, research programming, and joint funding mechanisms at
national, European and at global levels.
• supports the development of models of governance for delivering
sustainable agriculture and food from local to supra-national scales,
leading to greater impact.
• members have a solid understanding of the similarities and
differences in needs in Europe and developing countries.
This is done through
• Studies and Workshops (next: 26/27 January 2016, Brussels)
• Contribution to European Commission consultations

8. ARCH Side Event
Date: 26th January 2016
Occasion: DG AGRI Conference (27th – 28th January 2016) –
presentation of their Long Term Agricultural Research
and Innovation Strategy
Venue: Charlemagne building, Brussels
ARCH will provide a forum to discuss the global dimension
of the DG AGRI Strategy with the specific aim of identifying
how to build sustainable partnerships and alignment of
policies when addressing global issues.

May 2014 (Policy Brief resulting from a joint ARCH and AKIS Workshop
describing the best strategies for intercontinental research and innovation
partnerships towards greater impact on global challenges)
• Reviewing options for further integration of AR and ARD
towards a new policy framework. December 2014 (Study shows
that many societal challenges need global research efforts to be
adequately addressed. AR and ARD thematic priorities increasingly
overlap. Aligning AR and ARD investments need new models of
cooperation).
• Alliance capabilities. January 2015 (A compilation of brief studies of
linkages between AR and ARD in various countries)
