4. Types of settlements
Rural landscapes
The settlements, called towns, are small.
If they are very small, they are villages.
They can be mountain or coastal towns or
villages.
In areas it doesn’t rain a lot, houses are near
each other and next to rivers.
In areas it rains a lot, houses are farther away
from each other.
Buildings are low and made of natural
materials such as clay or stone.

Urban landscapes
They don’t have many naturals elements.
The settlements are big and many people live
them. They are cities or megacities (+ than 10
million people).
They can be coastal or inland.
They have wide streets divided into districts.
Older districts are in the centre. Buildings are
lower, streets narrower with irregular
patterns.
Modern districts have large blocks of flats or
skyscrapers (very tall) and grid patterns.
