This document describes two main types of landscapes: inland and coastal. It provides examples and definitions of key elements of each type. For inland landscapes, it discusses mountains, mountain ranges, hills, valleys, plains, plateaus, and rivers. Examples and images are given for each. For coastal landscapes, it defines cliffs, beaches, capes, gulfs, islands, archipelagos, peninsulas, and rivers along the coast. Examples are also provided for the coastal elements.

The mount Fuji is 3,776 metres high. It is the highest mountain in Japan.

MOUNTAIN RANGE:
It is a group of mountains.
You can see this mountain range is in Los Picos de Europa, in Asturias.

HILLS:
These elevations are lower than mountains.
Sierra de San Amaro. A hill which is close to Olivenza, in Badajoz.

VALLEY
It is an area of
low land between
mountain ranges.
It normally follows
the course of a river.
Valle del Jerte is a valley in the north of Cáceres.

PLAINS:
They are areas of flat, low lands.
A village in the plain of Vegas Bajas, close to the Guadiana river, in Badajoz.

PLATEAUS:
They are areas of flat, elevated land.
Madara plateau (Bulgaria).

They are high and rocky lands next to the
sea.

It’s a low and sandy land next to the sea.

CAPE:
It’s a large piece of land sticking out into
the sea.

GULF:
It’s a large area of sea that bites into the
land. If this area is small it’s called bay.

ISLAND:
It’s a piece of land completely surrounded
by water.

It’s a group of islands in the same area.

It’s a piece of land surrounded by the on all
