Photographic Practice
Research of other photographers

3. Theme or focus of images
These photographs stood out to me as I noticed the theme the photographer was
applying instantly. He seems to concentrate on culture and capturing his shots so
they look unexpected and in the moment. However, he has created every photo
presenting a different culture or race. We can’t tell when the photographs were
taken, as no date is provided also there are so many different time periods in the
photographs that each one must have been took days apart to organise props,
setting, location etc.
Composition
As the photographer decides where to stand, moves the camera, or zooms in on a
scene, she selects what to include in the image. What did the photographer choose
to include or exclude in the image? If she had zoomed out or stood further away,
what additional information could we see? The composition of the photograph can
also be altered later by cropping. Messages are shown in the photo from what the
photographer has decided to include in the frame. For example in one photograph
there are four women stood in a line facing sideways so we cannot see their face or
features. Obviously this is not an important factor otherwise the women would be
positioned differently.
Techniques used
In each photo a black and white effect is used. This creates age and a vintage style.
Depth of field is not really considered in each photo as each photograph is crystal
clear, for example nothing is blurred out or focused on. The photographer simply
chooses to include everything in the frame.
Strengths & Weaknesses
I enjoyed researching into these photographs as each one is so different. They each
have their own story and message for the target audience. Each photo has a theme
4. which is different cultures and time periods, this would be a good theme to include in
my photography work as it makes the photos more interested and appealing to look
at.
