THINK AND SHARE
Land preparation is a vital step in
farming and agriculture. It involves
the process of readying land for
cultivation, by clearing it of debris,
tilling the soil, and leveling it out.
This breaking up and turning of the
soil is important in order to aerate it
and allow for water and nutrients to
penetrate and be absorbed.

Soil type
•Sandy soil
•Silt soil
•Clay soil
•Loamy soil
•Peaty soil
Soil Fertility
Soil fertility is the ability of
a soil to sustain plant growth by
providing essential plant nutrients
and favorable chemical, physical,
and biological characteristics as a
habitat for plant growth.
Sloping area
Sloping land is land with a
gradient of over five per
cent1, or land with uneven
levels of elevation23. Sloping
land can slope downwards,
upward or sideway.
Water Drainage
Water drainage is
the removal of surface or
sub-surface water from
an area with excess
water1

Plowing
Plowing, also known as
tillage, is the process
of turning over the soil
in a field in order to
prepare it for planting
Harrowing is
further
preparation
of a seedbed
that comes
after
plowing.

Levelling of soil
Levelling of soil is the process
of modifying the surface
relief by smoothening it1. It
is done with an implement
called the leveller.
Good morning
students!
Cleaning/clearing - is done
to remove litter, rocks,
weeds, shrubs, trees, and
other structures from the
surface to make the next
activities easier prevent
damage of tools,
implements, and equipment.
How to prepare the land thoroughly?
Good morning
students!
Plowing – is the initial
breaking of soil surface.
Depending on the degree of
hardness and presence of
weeds and other plants,
plowing or hoeing could be
done two to three times from
7 - 10 days after the first
operation.
Good morning
students!
Harrowing - is done to further
breakdown the plowed or hoed slice of
soil to smaller sizes and to loosen the
soil particles using the spading fork or
harrow as needed. This makes the soil
particles smooth and even in size using
the same tools or equipment until such
time that the desired condition has been
achieved. The harrow must be drawn
either by working animals like carabao
or cow or by a tractor.

1.The class will be divided into 2
groups.
2.Each group will perform,
demonstrating the techniques, method
and tools to be used and the steps
process involving land preparation.
