When the Lake Mills community approved an addition/renovation project at the local middle school, the Lake Mills Area School District made sure sustainability was a key component of design and construction. The result is a Platinum LEED certified facility that will serve students for many years to come.

LAKE MILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL RENOVATION & EXPANSION
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Lake Mills Area School District, upgraded the Middle School located in the heart of the
community. The school serves children in fifth through eighth grade and is also used for community
purposes. The project drivers included; teacher interaction, unique learning spaces, improved
accessibility, connection to the neighborhood, be prudent with costs, replacement of outdated
systems and integrate sustainability. The design-build team’s goal was to create a home to serve the
mission of the District. It is a home for students that is bright, naturally day-lit, high-performing and
colorful; it has achieved the mission, project drivers of the School District and much more. A 57,231
square foot addition was built and the existing 36,632 square feet was renovated into a 93,863
square-foot, multi-level, green school with final costs $700,000 below the approved budget.
STRATEGIES AND RESULTS
The sustainable design strategy involved integrating green features throughout Lake Mills Middle
School that would become more than just building elements. The features are also educational
tools, providing hands-on learning opportunities for the teachers, students and the community.
Additionally, the design connects the teachers and students to nature, creating a positive
atmosphere that promotes learning.
Some of the features and results realized by the District include:
• The School will save nearly $85,000 annually due to reduced energy consumption as a
result of the high-performance building envelope, natural day lighting, exterior sun shelves
to avoid heat gain, daylight sensors, energy efficient lighting system, reduced need for
hot water, and a high-performing HVAC system, which includes a geothermal heating and
cooling system and an energy control system.
• The indoor air quality of the school is of the highest quality, and has significantly contributed
to enhancing the health of staff and students. Low-emitting materials such as adhesives,
coatings, paints, flooring materials, ceiling tiles, and new classroom furniture are Greenguard
Certified for Children and Schools, which also contributes to the enhanced indoor air quality
of the School.
• The Lake Mills Middle School conserves water through water-efficient landscaping and low-
flow, sensored, plumbing fixtures, reducing municipal water consumption more than 42%
compared to a conventionally designed school.
• A large emphasis was placed on selecting materials (27%) that have a high recycle content.
Wood products that were sustainably harvested and manufactured, carrying the FSC
certification, were selected (nearly 68% of the wood for the facility is FSC certified).
• Special consideration was given to materials that were harvested and manufactured within a
500-mile radius of Lake Mills. Over 63% of the materials were purchased regionally.
• More than 77% of the construction waste (595 tons) was diverted from the landfill through
recycling.
The renovation and addition to the Lake Mills Middle School is truly a successful example of a
green school. It enhances learning opportunities, uses the site and building as living teaching
tools, enhances the health and well-being of the staff and students.
