7. Legislation & Water Supply
2010 Integrated Resource Plan of Metropolitan
Water District calls for efforts to conserve water
and manage water resources in the most efficient
manner possible.
MWD searches for new water sources constantly
and is busy at work to make sure everyone saves
water – because the law of our state mandates it.

10. Statewide Legislation
Green Building Standards Code
California has (CALGREEN)
approved the
most stringent, Governor Schwarzenegger signed the first-
environmentally- in-the-nation statewide “Green Building
friendly building Standards Code” into law. It requires all
code in the new buildings in the state to be more

will apply to new responsible.

hospitals, major reductions in greenhouse gas
schools, shopping emissions, energy consumption and
malls and homes.

11. SB7: 20x2020 Water Conservation Plan
Published February 2010
Plan Scope and Process
20x2020 Plan sets forth a statewide road map to
maximize the state’s urban water efficiency and
conservation opportunities between 2009 and 2020,
and beyond.
Sets in motion a range of activities designed to
achieve the 20 percent per capita reduction in urban
water demand by 2020.
These activities include improving an understanding of
the variation in water use across California, promoting
legislative initiatives that incentivize water agencies to
promote water conservation, and creating evaluation
and enforcement mechanisms to assure regional and
statewide goals are met.

Irrigation Management Differentiate valves
Weather based from planters and turf

15. Landscape Water Use Conservation Methods
Water-efficient landscape designs using low water-use plants
Efficient irrigation systems
Minimized turf areas
Soil improvements and mulch
Regular maintenance of irrigation systems
Regular adjustment of irrigation controllers
Scheduling irrigation during early or late hours
Dedicated landscape water meters for monitoring of water
budget and leak detection
16. water conservation and “green” landscaping options
Outdoor Landscaping accounts for up to 50% of your monthly water usage.

18. What is LEED?
Born
in LEED = Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design
1993
LEED Certified = Buildings, Neighborhoods, Schools,
Retail, Homes, Commercial, +
LEED AP = Accredited Professional, a designation earned
by testing & experience
Where did GREEN thinking come from?
Independent organization not tied to or mandated by any government authority.
Everything place you see that is LEED certified, the Developers and Stakeholders have
voluntarily conformed to these standards.
19. Build It Green is a membership supported non-profit
Born organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy-
in and resource-efficient homes in California.
2003 Three strategic objectives guide our work:
•Drive policy development
•Increase supply of green homes
•Stimulate consumer demand
http://www.builditgreen.org/
By having a Certified Green Point Rater
evaluate a home's green features allowing
homes to be compared on a level playing
field. Think of GreenPoint Rated as
a report card for a home.
State Level Volunteer Framework to Earn „Green‟ Label
20. CALGREEN will require that every new building
Constructed in California By LAW:
IN
EFFECT • Reduce water consumption by 20 percent,
JAN • Divert 50 percent of construction waste from landfills
2011
• Install low pollutant-emitting materials.
• Requires separate water meters for nonresidential buildings
indoor and outdoor water use
• Requires moisture-sensing irrigation systems for larger landscape
projects
• Requires mandatory inspections of energy systems
(e.g., heat furnace, air conditioner and mechanical equipment
Green Building Standards Code (CALGREEN)
Water Usage Code reflects
LEED guidelines
21. Improve your landscape:
Indirect Benefits from adapting irrigation systems to
low water use systems.
Effective water management is not only good for the
pocketbook, it enhances landscapes for greater enjoyment
and contributes to higher property values
Changing landscape plants and ground covers to
drought tolerant material to use less water, ‘updates’ the
appearance and curb appeal raising the perceived property
value by beautification.
Putting less water through an irrigation system will attract
less weeds, pests, and plant disease.
Slow down the erosion rate of hardscape elements such
as; fences, concrete, asphalt, and stucco and extend their
usage life when irrigation overspraying and water run-off is
stopped.

Rebate : Make Your Reservation
The Save Water, Save A Buck program allows commercial,
industrial and institutional customers as well as common
landscaped areas of apartment, condo complexes and HOAs to
install water conserving devices with the use of attractive rebates
to encourage companies to cut their water use.
Devices available for rebates include:
Weather Based and Central Computer Irrigation Controllers
Rotating Spray Nozzle retrofits for Pop-up Spray Heads
High Efficiency Nozzle retrofits for Large Rotary Sprinklers
