Lacoste Achieves 93% Online Adoption and A Successful
Managed Travel Program with Egencia
The Challenge
Lacoste was ready to move to a managed travel program and enable travelers to book
directly online. With an upcoming Sales Conference, Retail Operations Manager and Travel
Manager, Fernando Renteria, was asked by his leadership team to launch a new travel
program within one week. His objectives were to reduce the amount of hours he was
currently spending on managing their travel program, increase spend visibility and win
traveler compliance.
The Solution
Fernando contacted several leading Travel Management Companies and found Egencia to
be the most responsive and engaged. Not only was Egencia able to meet his aggressive
timetable, the ease of use of the Egencia tool helped make the transition for his travelers
seamless.
The Results: A Seamless
Implementation Process
Fernando worked closely with his Egencia
Salesperson, Implementations Team and
Account Manager to have his Egencia site
up and running within seven days, despite
the timing of a week before Christmas.
A Pre-Trip Approval Process
that Empowered
Lacoste also introduced pre-trip
approval to curb unnecessary travel
expenses. Managers can now review
and approve or deny trips in a matter
of seconds with one click from their
laptop or mobile devices. Also, the
ability to designate back-up approvers
means that business moves forward
despite hectic schedules.

Fernando has been very pleased with

A Central Bill Program Opens the
Door to Career Advancement
New store openings have historically
been a great way to allow employees to
demonstrate their leadership skills, but
asking retail employees to foot the bill for
travel and wait for reimbursement was not
feasible. By leveraging central billing with

employee for each opportunity, regardless
of their financial situation. This has opened
the door for career advancement for many

•	 Launch a new travel program with a Travel Management Company within a week
•	 Transition to a managed, self-booking travel program from an unmanaged model with
arrangers booking all travel
•	 Reduce amount of internal resources devoted to managing travel program
•	 Leverage central billing model to ease financial burden on store employees

•	 Traveler compliance to the new managed travel program has been very strong with online
adoption rates of 93%

Reduced Air Ticket Prices By 23%
In their first full quarter with Egencia,
Lacoste was able to drive down costs
with air ticket prices 23% lower than
the industry average. Lacoste also
leverages Egencia’s hotel program to
secure competitive hotel rates as well as
complimentary amenities such as free
parking, breakfast and internet access.
In some cases, Egencia’s hotel rates
also offered last minute availability when
published rates were no longer available.
Spend Visibility and Flexible
Policy Tools
Fernando has enjoyed the ability to monitor
his travel spend in real-time with Egencia
reporting. This has historically been a
painful and very manual process; today,
Fernando has created ten traveler groups
based on region and a separate group for
Executive Travelers. For each group he has
established a low fare tolerance, advanced
purchase window, class of service
parameters as well as reasonable flight
guidance. Travelers leverage customized
reason codes to explain why an out of
policy travel choice is selected.
The combination of on-demand reporting
and policy tools has resulted in a significant
time savings for Fernando, the equivalent
of several weeks a year. He is now able to
focus more on his primary role of Retail
Operations Coordinator.
Online Adoption of 93%
Lacoste was able to realize an online
adoption rate of 93% right out of the gate
with Egencia. Lacoste Travelers enjoy that
booking on Egencia is just as intuitive as
booking on sister company, Expedia.com.
This ease of use has made encouraging
travelers to book online an easy task. When
booking online travelers are also able to
take advantage of handy tools such as
group trip collaboration and ‘repeat a trip’
functionality.
About Lacoste
The Lacoste crocodile is one of the most
famous and recognizable logos in the
world. Its birth was accidental since it came
from a simple bet between the members
of the French tennis team in 1925. While
walking through the elegant streets of the
Boston, René Lacoste stopped in front of
a boutique where his eye was drawn to a
superb suitcase made of crocodile skin and
he said to Pierre Gillou, the captain of the
team, “If I win the match, you must buy me
this suitcase.” In the days that followed, the
story was told to a journalist and, although
the French team did not win, the journalist
reported the story, saying “The young
Lacoste has not won his crocodile skin
suitcase but he fought like a real crocodile.”
As early as 1927, his friend and great
sportsman, Robert George, designed a
crocodile with its mouth wide open, which
René Lacoste wore conspicuously on his
blazer.
Today, the legacy of this remarkable man is
an expansive collection of sports and active
wear for men, women, and children, as well
as fragrance, eyewear, footwear, watches,
and technical products for tennis and golf,
which all display the famous crocodile.
