In thelast 50 yearsworldfoodproduction has skyrocketed, even more thantherate of
worldpopulation. Between 1990 and 1997 the per capitafoodproductiongrewbyalmost
25%, however, in theworldstill 830 millionhungrypeople, aboutone in seven,
whichrepresents a largerpopulationwhichlives in Europe. Theproblem of hunger, as
serious and widespreadphenomenon, notduetofoodshortages, butthepoverty of
theaffectedpopulations, wholackthemeanstoacquirethem.

Amongvarious UN specialized agencies engaged in thefightagainsthunger and important
social programshavebeenestablishedtopromotethefoodsecurity of thepoorestsectors of
thepopulation, especially in rural areas.




FAO:

Thebestknownspecializedagency in thefieldistheUnitedNationsOrganizationforFood and
Agriculture (FAO), whichsinceitscreationaimstoprovideaccessbyallpeople at all times
tothefoodtheyneedtoenjoyan active and healthylife,
throughvariousactionstoalleviatepoverty and
hungerbypromotingagriculturaldevelopment, improvednutrition and thepursuit of
foodsecurity.

The FAO has a CommitteeonWorldFood Security, whichisresponsibleforthemonitoring,

IFAD:
